University of Scranton Plans Inauguration for its 25th President

          The Inauguration Ceremony of Rev. Kevin P. Quinn, S.J., as The University of Scranton’s 25th president will take place on Friday, Sept. 16, in the William J. Byron, S.J., Recreation Complex. The ceremony, which is open to the public, is part of a weeklong series of events intended to introduce the new president to the University’s constituents, both in the greater Scranton region, as well as among higher education institutions in the nation.

          “We are pleased to invite members of the greater Scranton community to participate in a series of inauguration events that animate the University’s tradition of and commitment to Catholic and Jesuit education, service and culture, as we welcome and introduce Father Quinn in his new role as president of The University of Scranton,” said Robert Davis, executive assistant and chief of staff for the president, who is chairing the inauguration committee with Debra Pellegrino, Ed.D., dean of the Panuska College of Professional Studies.

          The inauguration events begin with A Celebration of Service on Friday, Sept. 9. Throughout the day, students, faculty and staff will join Father Quinn as volunteers to help with community service projects in the region.

         University employees along with their families will meet Father Quinn at the University Picnic on Sunday, Sept. 11, at the University’s Retreat Center at Chapman Lake. The event will begin at 11 a.m. with a Mass in Remembrance of September 11.

          On Tuesday, Sept. 13, an Inauguration Lecture entitled “A Jesuit Perspective on Making Human Rights and Religion Friends, Not Foes” will be presented by world-renowned human rights attorney Rev. Frank Brennan, S.J., professor of law at the Australian Catholic University and chair of the Australian National Human Rights Consultation Committee. The Inauguration Lecture, which is open to the public, free of charge, will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Rev. Bernard R. McIlhenny, S.J., Ballroom of the Patrick and Margaret DeNaples Center.

          Bishop Joseph C. Bambera of the Diocese of Scranton will serve as principal celebrant at the Inauguration Eucharist on Thursday, Sept. 15, at 4 p.m. in the Byron Recreation Complex. Rev. Michael McCarthy, S.J., executive director of the Ignatian Center for Jesuit Education at Santa Clara University, will serve as homilist. The public is invited to attend the liturgy, which will be followed by refreshments to be served on the University’s Commons.

         The Inauguration Ceremony will begin at 11:30 a.m. on Sept. 16. The ceremony is open to the public. Members of The University of Scranton community, participants and guests attending the ceremony on Friday are also invited to an informal lunch, which will be served on the University’s Commons following the ceremony.

         The University of Scranton Performance Music Choral and Instrumental Ensembles will perform an original composition by renowned conductor, composer, teacher and bassist Lawrence Wolfe at the Inauguration Concert on Saturday, Sept. 17, at 7:30 p.m. in the Houlihan-McLean Center. The composition, entitled “Rejoice in the Lord Always,” is based upon one of Father Quinn’s favorite passages from Philippians (4:4-8). The concert is free and open to the pubic.
