Sustainable Practices to be Celebrated at Community Earth Day Events in April

Area residents can attend nearly a dozen events in April centered around Earth Day, and intended to raise awareness of ecological issues and promote sustainability. The public events, organized by The University of Scranton’s Office of Sustainability, are free of charge, and focus on the theme “Climate Change, a Time for Change.”

A Spring Sustainability Symposium will feature a student panel discussion about climate change. The event will begin at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 13, in the McIlhenny Ballroom of the DeNaples Center.

An Earth Day Art Show showcasing environmentally-themed art work submitted by faculty, staff, students and area residents will be on display Friday, April 15, to Earth Day, Friday, April 22, in the fifth floor Heritage Room of the Weinberg Memorial Library. The display can be viewed during library hours.

From the afternoon of Monday, April 18, through the evening of Thursday, April 21, artwork and essays submitted by local elementary, middle and high school students for The University of Scranton and Pennsylvania American Water art and essay contests will be displayed in the Atrium of the Loyola Science Center.

On Tuesday, April 19, University students will join area business representatives at an “Earth Day Fair” that features interactive presentations and information about the environment and sustainability practices. The fair takes place between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. at the DeNaples Center Patio.

“An Evening of Environmental Science” on Thursday, April 21, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. will include interactive science experiments and displays presented by University students and faculty, refreshments and the display of artwork and essays submitted by local students for The University of Scranton and Pennsylvania American Water art and essay contests. Essay contest winners will be announced at the event hosted by the University’s Sustainability Club.

On Saturday, April 23, the University, in conjunction with Lackawanna Valley Heritage Association (LVHA) and University Bike Share program, will host an Environmental Bike Tour. The route will avail participants to environmental sight-seeing and educational destinations throughout the City of Scranton. The tour begins at 10 a.m. at the Monroe Avenue entrance of the Loyola Science Center. Reservations are required to participate and can be made by emailing Mark.Murphy@scranton.edu. Bikes are also available if needed and can be requested with your reservation.

The Weinberg Memorial Library Annual Book Sale will be held April 29 through May 1 in the fifth floor Heritage Room. The sale takes place on April 30 from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and from noon to 4 p.m. on May 1. Proceeds from the sale benefit the Friends of the Weinberg Memorial Library Endowment, which supports library collections and services.

On Saturday, May 7, the University will host an electronic recycling and document shredding event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the corner of Linden Street and Monroe Avenue. Area residents can bring paper for shredding, as well as items for recycling, ranging from cables to blenders to televisions. The event is sponsored by Cintas Document Management and Vintage Tech Recyclers and is free of charge to area residents. This event is organized and staffed by members of Student Sustainability Club and IT Department.

In addition to these events, which are offered free of charge and open to the public, University students will volunteer for Street Sweep, an annual city cleanup and beautification effort organized by the University’s Student Government. The Street Sweep is scheduled for Saturday, April 16. Students will also participate in a kayak event on the Susquehanna River.
