Medical Alumni Symposium At The University of Scranton

Mar 17, 2009

In order to help keep medical professionals abreast of recent advancements in their field, The Medical Alumni Council of The University of Scranton Alumni Society will present a Medical Alumni Symposium on March 28 in Brennan Hall on campus. The symposium, designed for physicians, dentists and medical school students, is not limited to University of Scranton alumni.

The symposium, from which physicians can earn up to 6 credits for continuing education, will begin with registration and a continental breakfast in Brennan Hall. The morning's first lecturer, Scranton alumnus Andrew S. Quinn, Esq., principal of Compliance Concepts, Inc., will discuss the federal government's increased scrutiny of the health care industry and practical compliance strategies medical professionals can use to avoid allegations of waste, fraud and abuse. Following Mr. Quinn's lecture, Scranton alumna Pamela Q. Taffera, D.O., M.B.A., chief resident and post graduate year-two family medicine resident at Saint Joseph Medical Center, will discuss the art of negotiation in administrative medicine.

Lunch will be served after the morning session along with addresses by The University of Scranton President, Rev. Scott R. Pilarz, S.J., and Associate Provost for Academic Affairs, Joseph H. Dreisbach, Ph. D.

Scranton alumnus Geno Merli, M.D. FACP., senior vice president and chief medical officer at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, will begin the afternoon session with his lecture on the safety and efficacy of the new class of oral anticoagulants. Other distinguished alumni will present lectures throughout the symposium on topics ranging from coronary disease risk factors and medical malpractice law, to the ethical dilemmas faced by military physicians.

A $135 conference fee includes admission to the symposium and lunch. University of Scranton alumni currently enrolled in medical school may attend at no cost. For additional information, call 941-7660.
