The University of Scranton was already one of America’s best colleges, according to Forbes.

Now, the publication says, the University is getting even better.

The University of Scranton rose more than 125 spots year over year, making a return trip as one of 500 institutions of higher learning on the annual Forbes List of America’s Top Colleges 2026. The ranking is based on return on investment, average student debt and outcomes for graduates, among other factors.

Scranton is ranked 261st, climbing 138 spots from its 399th ranking a year ago.

This is the 17th year in which Scranton has made the list of elite schools, which includes 26 others in Pennsylvania.

Forbes’ ranking methodology was based on: 20% alumni salary, 15% debt, 15% graduation rate, 15% Forbes American Leaders List, 15% return on investment, 10% retention rate and 10% academic success.

Scranton’s Class of 2024 reported a 99% success rate in achieving their intended career path for graduates earning a bachelor’s degree. Those earning a graduate degree reported a 100% success rate, according to the Roche Family Center for Career Development’s First Destination Survey.

The University of Scranton has recently appeared on multiple noteworthy lists. Among them, the Princeton Review ranked Scranton a top-25 college in the nation in the Most Engaged in Community Service and Best Science Lab Facilities categories. The Princeton Review, which selected Scranton as one of the nation’s 391 Best Colleges, also featured the University’s Kania School of Management (KSOM) on its Best On-Campus MBA Programs list. The University was also highlighted by Niche as a top-50 destination for Best College Food in America. Scranton has also ranked as a top-10 Best Regional University in the North by U.S. News for 31 consecutive years.

Performance Music at The University of Scranton will welcome Relic Ensemble, an 11-piece period instrument chamber orchestra that connects with audiences through intimate, imaginative and dramatic representations of early music, on Friday, Sept. 12.

The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Houlihan-McLean Center, Mulberry Street and Jefferson Avenue, downtown Scranton. Admission is free and the concert is open to the public. Seating is on a first-come, first-seated basis.

This performance, part of Relic’s fourth U.S. concert tour, will be Relic’s inaugural performance at The University of Scranton. However, some of its individual members have graced the stage of Houlihan-McLean in seasons past (including Kako Boga, “bonus daughter” of Performance Music conductor and artistic director Cheryl Y. Boga).

The tour debuts Relic’s newest program, “The Spheres,” which takes audiences on a breathtaking journey through the cosmos by bringing to life the rich mythology of the celestial spheres through works by Bach, Handel, Vivaldi and others. 

Lauded as “stylish and innovative," by New York Classical Review, Relic’s programming uses narrative “chapters” to unite a variety of repertoire into a breathtaking concert experience, capturing the hearts of new and seasoned concertgoers alike. Founded in 2022, Relic's commitment to taking early music on the road to all 50 states brings it to dozens of communities each season. Relic’s recent presenters include Chamber Music Detroit, Academy of Early Music, The Cleveland Museum of Art, Indianapolis Early Music Festival, Western Michigan University and Gotham Early Music Scene. Its current season includes performances in Ohio, Michigan, Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia.

Committed to sharing their passion for early music with students of all ages, Relic members have given workshops, masterclasses and side-by-side performances at numerous schools. Most recently, Relic engaged in residencies at University of Maryland, Washington International School and Kalamazoo College. Relic actively seeks community engagement opportunities, offering children’s concerts, performances in nontraditional venues and open rehearsals in many of the regions it visits.

The University’s dining options include a food court on the first floor of the DeNaples Center, which has multiple stations and restaurants offering grab-and-go items and counter-service, including Starbucks, Chick-fil-A and Which Wich. There is an additional food court at Montrone Hall, as well as the Fresh Food Company, which has numerous cooking stations in an open kitchen environment on the third floor of the DeNaples Center. There is also an Einstein Bros. Bagels shop at Leahy Hall; the Provisions on Demand (POD) Market at the Weinberg Memorial Library for grab-and-go items; the DeNaples POD Market for convenience store items; Costa Coffee; a Just Baked machine; and more.

Scranton received an “A” grade from Niche in “Campus Food.”

Niche’s rankings are based on data including student reviews and meal plan costs.

“Top-ranked colleges offer outstanding on-campus dining,” Niche says on its website. “Students can easily access healthy, quality food across a wide range of cuisines and dietary preferences.”

Rev. Bernard R. McIlhenny, S.J., dean of admissions emeritus, has played the Falls course at the Country Club of Scranton enough times to understand its nuances and quirks.

“There’s a little bit of a roll, right to left, around the green,” he said. “And then the green itself has a couple of different rolls.”

As Father McIlhenny hit from the tee during a round last month, he grabbed a 7-iron and swung for the green. Then, he went looking for the ball.

“The other three guys, they find their balls,” Father McIlhenny said. “But I can’t see mine.”

Father McIlhenny assumed the worst — that his ball had strayed off into the rough — but was instead greeted with the best news: his ball was in the cup.

Father McIlhenny, 99, had made a hole-in-one.

“It’s always a wonderful thing and a sheer point of luck,” he said. “That started a lot of laughing, a lot of celebration and so on. That’s been going on now for a couple days … it’s been a lot fun connecting with it and I’ve really enjoyed it honestly.”

Father McIlhenny was born in Philadelphia and attended St. Joseph’s Preparatory School, where, he said, he wasn’t much of an athletic kid.

It was at West Baden College in Indiana — about 60 miles from Louisville, Kentucky — where, from 1947-50, he started playing golf with Eddie Maloney and Jack Alexander.

“They were from the New York province and they were very good golfers, especially Father Maloney, who was the one that taught me how to play golf,” Father McIlhenny said.

Father McIlhenny has played golf ever since. This was his second career hole-in-one; the other happened in 1955 in Baltimore, Maryland.

Father McIlhenny came to Northeastern Pennsylvania in 1958 as headmaster of Scranton Preparatory School, where he served until 1966, when he was named the University’s director of admissions. He served in that role through 1997 and resides at the University’s Campion Hall.

The Schemel Forum’s University for a Day features a daylong series of talks and discussions about topics related to health, economics, history and spirituality.

The event will be held Saturday, Sept. 20, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Moskovitz Theater of the DeNaples Center at The University of Scranton. In addition to the usual Schemel Forum audience, the University for a Day event will be offered to youth in the area. High school students must register in advance.

“Thanks to a generous grant from Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield, the first 50 high school juniors and seniors to sign up will attend the day for free,” said George J. Aulisio, Ph.D., dean of the Weinberg Memorial Library and director of the Schemel Forum.

Leading off the day is Cyrus Paul Olsen III, D.Phil., associate professor of Theology/Religious Studies, affiliate faculty member of Health Humanities at Scranton and affiliate research fellow of the Human Network Initiative at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Dr. Olsen will present “Gorillas, Ghosts & Gods: Networks of Belonging in Africa.”

In this talk, Dr. Olsen, a longtime faculty member at Scranton and Co-PI of original research associated with the Clinical Neurology Lab at Harvard/Brigham and Women’s Hospital, will explore how diverse networks of belonging shape planetary identity, health and hope. He will share information from an international project set in Uganda where he has been part of a Clinical Neurology “dry lab” that uses social science to think about clinical, social and economic interventions in developing and maintaining healthy communities.

The title of his talk provides an entree into the topic. A key institutional partner for Dr. Olsen’s research is an award-winning hospital near the rainforest where endangered mountain gorillas live alongside growing human communities. Ghosts represent the connections some of those communities retain with their ancestors and spirits, alluding to how African spirituality connects with health-seeking behaviors in communities. And Gods looks at the connections between traditional African religion and Christianity, which came much later in that part of the world.

“Essentially we are taking a snapshot of the community as a window into the vulnerabilities of that community,” said Dr. Olsen.

Amid the “loneliness epidemic” in which we live, having a sense of belonging is key to healthy communities and people.

“We need people, community and interaction to thrive,” said Dr. Olsen.

His talk will present new research models for including neglected factors influencing global health and in places too often, such as Sub-Saharan Africa. He will also provide insight into life in Uganda and will share original video footage from his trips there.

Next, David Dzurec, Ph.D., associate provost and professor of history at the University, will present “Natives, Immigrants and Nationalism: John Bapst, the Penobscot, and the Politics of Intolerance in the Nineteenth-Century U.S.”

In 1854, Father John Bapst, a Jesuit priest, was tarred and feathered by an angry mob in Ellsworth, Maine, as part of a spate of anti-Catholic violence in the United States in the 1850s. Father Bapst’s story began years earlier as a missionary among the Penobscot Indians, where he faced deep divisions over land, leadership and religion.

In this talk, Dr. Dzurec will follow Father Bapst’s dramatic journey from revolutionary Europe to frontier Maine and will examine how life — and the violence he faced — reflected bigger struggles over immigration, religion and national identity in nineteenth-century America. Through Father Bapst’s story, participants will learn how local tensions were part of a much larger, global story.

Next will be a presentation by Anna Jaskiewicz, Ph.D., assistant professor of Economics, Finance and International Business at the University, who will discuss “Roots and Remedies for Health Disparities in the U.S.”

In her talk, Dr. Jaskiewicz will examine the social determinants underlying health disparities in the United States and explore research-driven solutions to advance health equity. Health is something almost everyone can relate to, whether through personal experiences or those of people close to us. Yet we often tend to see health as purely an individual responsibility, said Dr. Jaskiewicz.

“This suggests that poor health outcomes reflect personal failure. In fact, historical, economic and environmental systems play a major role in shaping our health,” said Dr. Jaskiewicz, who was drawn to this topic because of her belief that it’s essential to highlight how structural inequalities, not just individual choices, drive many of the health disparities we see today.

“In my own research, I’ve found that exposure to racially motivated hate crimes in one’s area of residence is associated with worse birth outcomes for African American infants. This is one example of how deeply these systemic issues can affect even the earliest stages of life,” she said.

Other examples of factors contributing to health disparities include exposure to environmental hazards, such as when people live or work in areas with poor air or water quality, and medical mistrust rooted in a history of mistreatment, she said.

“It can sometimes feel disheartening to look at the statistics around health disparities. But I hope participants of this talk walk away understanding that we’re not powerless and there are real policy tools available to address these inequities,” said Dr. Jaskiewicz.

For the final presentation of the day, Joan A. Grossman, Ph.D., RD, professor of health and human performance at Scranton, will present “The Power of Small Changes: Food, Activity and Quality of Life.”

During this informative session, participants will discover how food choices impact body weight. Dr. Grossman, a registered dietitian/nutritionist, will help participants gain an understanding of how small changes in daily activity can improve a person’s quality of life and increase their longevity for lifelong good habits.

A first-year college student has much to learn: classwork, campus maps, neighbors, routines.

Thankfully for The University of Scranton’s incoming first-year undergraduate students, countless upperclassmen have come before them and are eager to share their tips to ensure a smooth transition.

“Everybody is super welcoming, helpful and happy, which really helps,” said Zoey Powers ’29, a communications major from Tunkhannock. “It helps calm the stress when everybody around is smiling and isn’t worried. It’s like, ‘OK, I don’t have anything to be worried about either.’”

Powers is one of 940-plus incoming first-year undergraduate students who today begin their freshman year. Members of the class of 2029 were selected from a pool of 9,568 applicants with an average SAT score of 1,242. Additionally, the University is welcoming more than 35 transfer students.

Powers and other first-year boarding students received a helpful hand during Saturday’s First-Year Move-In. Dozens of upperclassmen volunteers were stationed throughout campus at residence halls and parking lots, unpacking vehicles and carrying boxes.

“I find myself doing this just because of how much I love the campus,” said Daylene Marin Garzon ’26, a student orientation team leader and criminal justice major from Liberty, New York. “I love the community and I love how much it has welcomed me into it. So, I want to also do the same for others."

While most incoming first-year students moved in Saturday, a handful, like Nicco Diana ’29, an economics and philosophy major from Dallas, got a head start. Diana moved in early as a member of the University’s cross country team.

“The campus was a little quiet that first week,” he said, “but for me, it was a great way to get adjusted to campus. I was able to walk to my classes, meet my team. All the guys are super friendly and cool, teaching us everything about the campus and what to do, what not to do.”

Diana returned the favor, too, when his roommate and fellow Lake-Lehman High School graduate Samuel Plummer ’29, a business administration major, moved in Saturday.

“He was helping me out the whole time because he moved in early,” Plummer said.

About 49% of the incoming freshmen hail from Pennsylvania, trailed by New Jersey (23%) and New York (21%). Connecticut and Maryland round out the top-five most common home states. In total, first-year undergraduate students have traveled from 16 states and four international countries.

The incoming freshmen have collectively declared 61 majors. The most common majors are nursing (10%), biology (7%), kinesiology (7%), finance (6%), business administration (6%) and occupational therapy (5%).

The class of 2029 also includes 71 legacy children whose parents graduated from The University of Scranton.

Additionally, about 250 graduate students will begin their studies in the fall term with more slated to begin in the spring. Between on-campus and online graduate learners, the University’s incoming graduate student class spans 20 states, including much of the East Coast and Oregon, Washington, California, Texas, Florida and other states nationwide.

Today is the first day of classes in the fall term.

“It’s honestly amazing to be back,” said Caroline Filmyer ’28, an occupational therapy major and resident assistant from Collegeville. “When I was home for the summer, I was just thinking, ‘When am I going back to school?'

“Now, I’m here and this environment is bringing back all the fun memories from last year.”

The University of Scranton recently received high marks — across multiple categories — from one of the nation’s leading education services companies.

The 2026 edition of the Princeton Review’s Best Colleges, published online Aug. 12, ranked Scranton as No. 21 Most Engaged in Community Service and No. 24 Best Science Lab Facilities. Scranton is one of only four colleges to have earned top-25 rankings in both categories.

Additionally, the University’s Kania School of Management (KSOM) was highlighted earlier this summer in the Princeton Review’s Best Business Schools for 2025 report. KSOM was one of 213 schools selected to the Best On-Campus MBA Programs list. Schools were selected based on data including student surveys, career outcomes, admissions selectivity and academic rigor.

The Best Colleges report also distinguished Scranton as one of the 391 Best Colleges (national), one of 511 Green Colleges and one of the 98 Best Mid-Atlantic Colleges.

“The colleges we profile in our ‘Best Colleges’ book are a truly select group. They constitute only about 15% of America's nearly 2,400 four-year institutions," Rob Franek, editor-in-chief of the Princeton Review and the book’s lead author, said in a press release. “While they vary by locale, type, size and campus culture, each one offers its students an academically outstanding undergraduate education. In our opinion, they are the nation's best undergraduate colleges and ideal choices for students seeking their ‘best-fit’ college.”

Rankings are based on data points including a survey of 170,000 students responding to 98 prompts and questions; among them, how strongly students agree or disagree with the statements “Students are committed to community service” and “How do you rate your school’s science lab facilities?”

University students quoted by the Princeton Review said Scranton emphasizes “well-rounded education” with “discussions, hands-on learning with simulation laboratories and outdoor classes.”

“There are also a number of service-oriented clubs and ‘activities like volunteering at food pantries or helping with educational programs for underserved communities (are) especially meaningful,’” it said.

The most recent Community and Economic Impact Report, produced by the University’s Office of Community Relations, found that University students provided tens of thousands of hours of community service during the 2023-24 academic year. The Center of Service and Social Justice works regularly with 120-plus local nonprofit organizations on projects including food, clothing, gift and blood drives, mentoring and summer camp programs for area youth and other special events.

The University’s Loyola Science Center (LSC), a four-story, state-of-the-art facility with 34 laboratories, is home to the University’s biology, chemistry, physics/electrical engineering, mathematics and computer science departments. Leahy Hall, home to the University’s physical therapy, occupational therapy, kinesiology and other health science programs, includes more than 30 laboratories and traditional and active-learning classrooms, including an Orthopedic and Therapeutic Modalities laboratory, a Rehabilitation and Neurological laboratory and a hospital simulation room. Scranton also has new laboratory spaces for mechanical engineering research, design, development, building and testing.

“We don’t rank colleges based on our opinion of them nor would we crown a school ‘best’ overall,” Franek said. “It is what the students attending the colleges in this book tell us about their experiences at their schools that determines on which lists the schools appear in our book.”

Former U.S. Senator Bob Casey has joined The University of Scranton as a Leahy Distinguished Fellow in Public Service, a role that will engage the Scrantonian and three-term senator across several aspects of campus life.

Sen. Casey, drawing on his experience from 18 years in the Senate and a decade in statewide positions, will mentor students, advise on relevant initiatives and broadly contribute to University activities aligned with public service and leadership.

Speaking Tuesday at an event announcing his hire, Sen. Casey said he is excited and grateful to provide students with a “real-world perspective” on government, policy, politics and elections. He also said he hopes to instill an appreciation for and understanding of public service in all students — not just those interested in politics.

“All of us together can provide opportunities for young people to learn about public service, to be inspired to serve,” Sen. Casey said. “It doesn’t have to be public office. It doesn’t have to be in government. Even if you’re running the biggest corporation in the world, you can still work on behalf of the public in some fashion.”

Born and raised in Scranton, Sen. Casey has dedicated his life to public service. He’s won six statewide elections, serving as Pennsylvania’s Auditor General for two terms (1997-2005) and State Treasurer for one term (2005-2007) before being elected to the U.S. Senate in 2006. He remained in office until 2024-25.

“As difficult as it is and as onerous as it could be on the candidate or the public official, it is still a high calling,” Sen. Casey said. “We need the next generation — some of whom are in this room — of young people in the United States of America to choose to serve. They might choose to serve and have different points of view than I do, or other students might have. But just like the University’s Center for Ethics and Excellence in Public Service is already doing, I believe it’s critically important that young people are inspired and even taught that if you serve in public office, you have to do it ethically. You could have different points of view or a different philosophy, but everybody’s got to be ethical.”

Over the course of his 18 years in the U.S. Senate, Sen. Casey earned a reputation as an effective legislator known for his ability to work across party lines and focus on practical solutions. He authored and passed 99 pieces of legislation into law, including the Achieving a Better Life Experience (ABLE) Act, widely recognized as the most impactful piece of legislation for people with disabilities since the Americans with Disabilities Act. As chair of the Senate Special Committee on Aging and a longtime member of the Finance and HELP (Health, Education, Labor and Pension) Committees, Sen. Casey established himself as one of the leading advocates in Congress for children, workers, seniors and people with disabilities.

“I am truly delighted to welcome Senator Casey to our University,” said Rev. Joseph G. Marina, S.J., University president. “His Jesuit education has served him well for decades and I have no doubt he will continue to bring his Jesuit values to bear in this exciting, new role. I am very grateful to the Senator and the Leahys for making this new initiative possible.”

The University of Scranton is a Catholic, Jesuit institution, guided by the spiritual and intellectual legacy of St. Ignatius, whose principles inform how the University teaches and serves. These principles, including magis (striving to do more and be greater) and cura personalis (care for each person), are familiar to Sen. Casey, who graduated from Jesuit institutions Scranton Preparatory High School and the College of the Holy Cross. He spent a year as a Jesuit volunteer, teaching and coaching in North Philadelphia, before earning a law degree from Catholic University.

“Public service is infused with Jesuit values,” Sen. Casey said. “I think we have to bring those values to the public square and try to move our society forward.”

In this part-time position, Sen. Casey will mentor and guide students interested in pursuing public service careers; advise the Center for Ethics and Excellence in Public Service on program initiatives and share expertise with regional government entities through its outreach activities; and serve as a resource for the campus and the broader community on health care, aging, ethics, government accountability and public service issues through lectures and seminars. He will also assist University administrators with government relations and resource development efforts.

The Leahy Fellow is supported by Edward ’68, H’01 and Patricia Leahy. The longtime University benefactors are synonymous with service and achievement at The University of Scranton, which dedicated Edward R. Leahy Hall in 2015 in honor of their late son, Edward, Jr., and named the Leahy College of Health Sciences in their honor.

“I think this is a really important day — a ‘hallmark’ day, a ‘signal’ day, whatever you want to call it — in the life of this University,” Edward Leahy said. “Today, we celebrate the union of the values of a great, Jesuit University, joining with a leader with integrity who has embodied the principles of ethics in government.

“Our students, the entire University and the community at-large will have the opportunity to benefit from the programs, the advice, the discussions.”

The former Senator and his wife, Terese, reside just a few blocks from campus, having lived for the last 35 years in a house in the city’s Hill Section.

The 2025-26 academic year at The University of Scranton begins later this month with Move-in on Saturday, Aug. 23, followed by the first day of classes Monday, Aug. 25.

The University of Scranton will celebrate the Feast of St. Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Society of Jesus, with a Mass on Thursday, July 31. Mass will begin at 12:05 p.m. in the Madonna della Strada Chapel on campus. Rev. Ron McKinney, S.J., professor of philosophy, will preside.

Immediately following Mass, an ice cream social, sponsored by the Jesuit Center, will take place at the Flag Pole Terrace near the University’s gateway sign.

The next generation of internet users needs to bring with it a new group of online protectors, ensuring a safe and secure experience.

Twenty-one potential online guardians recently attended The University of Scranton’s Cyber-AI Investigation Camp, where they learned the basics of cybersecurity, robotic investigation, artificial intelligence (AI) and more through a series of lectures, hands-on exercises and games.

The camp, which was held July 8-10, attracted current high school students from Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island and Texas.

“The purpose of what we’re doing is to not only enhance and train our students in the technical aspects, but to also inspire them as a future cyber-investigator, cyber-defender, detective or cybersecurity expert,” said Sinchul Back, Ph.D., associate professor and director of the University’s cybercrime and homeland security program. “We just want to inspire them to find joy in what could be their future career.”

The University’s Department of Criminal Justice, Cybersecurity and Sociology first held the camp in 2021. As technology and trends have evolved in the past five years, so has the camp, which placed a greater emphasis this year on AI.

The University of Scranton welcomed hundreds of incoming first-year students and their families on Monday, June 23, signaling the official start of New Student Orientation.

Designed to introduce new students and their families to various aspects of the University — including facilities, support services, procedures and academic and extracurricular activities — New Student Orientation is comprised of two days of sessions. The first of four groups is on campus June 23-24. Sessions continue on Thursday, June 26 and Friday, June 27; Monday, June 30 and Tuesday, July 1; and Wednesday, July 2 and Thursday, July 3.

Beta Alpha Psi, the International Honor Organization for Financial Information Students and Professionals, recently announced one of its top honors will be awarded to an instructor at The University of Scranton.

Amanda Marcy ’10, Ph.D., assistant professor of accounting, earned one of Beta Alpha Psi’s Outstanding Faculty Advisors awards. As many as four faculty advisors — whose efforts go above and beyond that of the typical faculty advisor — are awarded at each Beta Alpha Psi annual meeting. This year’s meeting will be held Aug. 14-16 in San Antonio, Texas.

While Dr. Marcy has worked at The University of Scranton since 2015, she’s a graduate, too. She earned bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate degrees at the University. Dr. Marcy previously worked in assurance services for Baker Tilly in Pittston.

Dr. Marcy, a certified public accountant, is a member of the Healthcare Financial Management Association, the Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Association of International Certified Professional Accounts, the American Accounting Association, and the Institute of Management Accountants. She has earned numerous awards in her professional career, including the Frank O’Hara Award while an undergraduate student at Scranton, two Douglas M. Boyle Research Awards in 2020 and 2023 and the Michael O. Mensah Service Award in 2025.

Beta Alpha Psi has more than 300 college and university chapters, as well as 370,000-plus members initiated since it was formed in 1919. Its purposes include promoting academic excellence, professional development, responsible practices and shaping a successful evolution of education. Dr. Marcy has served as faculty advisor for The University of Scranton’s Nu Kappa Chapter of Beta Alpha Psi since 2015. Under her leadership, the chapter has achieved Gold-level status for each of the past three academic years.

Staff members at The University of Scranton had written countless words, snapped thousands of pictures and captured numerous hours of video content covering this year’s undergraduate and graduate commencement ceremonies.

The most viral piece of content was an 11-second TikTok video, showing an aerial perspective of the University’s undergraduate procession at Mohegan Arena. The post has more than 2 million views and 93,000-plus likes. Backed by ABBA’s “Thank You for the Music” and inspired by a post from the University of Miami (Florida), the video was recorded over 22 minutes but sped up and trimmed down into a short clip. Most of the views came from TikTok’s For You Page, or FYP, which shows users a curated stream of short-form videos tailored to their interests.

The University’s other social media channels generated hundreds of thousands of impressions during commencement, covering everything from Rev. Joseph G. Marina, S.J., president, proceeding with his beloved dog, Gracie, to the variety of graduation cap decorations that reflected the personalities, achievements and future aspirations of recent graduates.

Rabbi Sholomo Ben Levy, professor of history at Northampton Community College, presented “Black Jews in America: Diversity and Identity” at The University of Scranton’s Weinberg Judaic Studies Institute Lecture on campus in November. The lecture was co-sponsored by the University’s Black Studies Concentration.

Rabbi Levy serves as president of the International Israelite Board of Rabbis, Inc., an organization of black rabbis representing congregations throughout the United States, Caribbean, and Africa. He is Rabbi and Spiritual Leader of the Beth Elohim Hebrew Congregation, Saint Albans, New York.

The Weinberg Judaic Studies Institute was created in 1979 through an endowment funded by the local Jewish community. The Institute fosters a better understanding and appreciation of Judaism, Israel, and their histories. It supports visits to the University by Jewish scholars and writers and supports library acquisitions, publications, faculty research, travel and other scholarly endeavors. The work of the Institute was further enhanced by a $1 million gift from Harry Weinberg in 1990.

On Oct. 3,  Dr. Krisy Elrod, assistant professor in the Counseling and Human Services Department, will present “Play Your Way To Cultural Humility,” a Diversity + Inclusion = A Better U! lunch and learn workshop for faculty and staff. 

Dr. Elrod will talk about the difference between cultural competence and cultural humility, then use art and play activities to help people explore their own cultural identity. The program will begin 11:30 a.m. in the Kane Forum, Leahy Hall 235. Registration is required.

Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month is observed each year from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15 to honor the cultures and experiences of Americans who have ancestral roots in Central or South America, Spain, Mexico and the Caribbean.  

The University of Scranton will host a series of celebratory events including a film series, a cultural awareness night, a restaurant tour and more. The theme for this year, “Pioneers of Change: Shaping the Future Together,” will spotlight influential figures who have paved the way for change in the Hispanic/Latinx community.

The Multicultural Center and Association of Latinx American Students will begin Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month with a table sit Monday, Sept. 16 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the 2nd floor of the DeNaples Center.  

Latin American and Latinx Studies will present La Muerte de Pinochet, Tuesday, Sept. 17 at 5 p.m., Pearn Auditorium, Brennan Hall 228 as part of a Latin American Film Series with a focus on history and politics.

The Multicultural Center will host a Hispanic Heritage Month Cultural Conversation, “Latino Voices and Pioneers that have Shaped the Future of Latinos in the U.S.,” Wednesday, Sept. 18, 8 p.m. in the DeNaples Center, room 405. Jose Sanchez, Assistant Director for the Cultural Centers, highlights the figures that will be discussed in this cultural conversation. “Attendees will learn more about these Latino pioneers: Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta, Sylvia Rivera, Dr. Ellen Ochoa, Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, Luis Alvarez and Illeana Ros-Lehiten,” he said. 

The Multicultural Center and the Association of Latinx American Students will also sponsor Latino Culture Night, Thursday, Sept. 26 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Multicultural Center Lounge Area. Students can take part in various activities to celebrate Latino culture. “We are planning to have board games, Latin dances, music and cultural videos showcasing Latin American countries,” Sanchez said.

"Hispanic Heritage Month is really important to our University because it highlights the rich culture, history, and contributions of Latinx communities, which often go unrecognized,” he said.

It also gives the entire community a chance to learn, engage and build understanding ... which helps foster a more inclusive and supportive environment for everyone in the Latinx community.”

October Events Spotlight Hispanic Literature, Cuisine and Collaborations
 

Next month, Emily Aguilo Perez, shown at left, will present “An American Icon in Puerto Rico: Barbie, Girlhood, and Colonialism at Play,” Wednesday, Oct. 2 at 5 p.m. in Brennan Hall, Pearn Auditorium, 228. The Slattery Center for Ignatian Humanities will sponsor this presentation. 

The Multicultural Center, Latin American and Latinx Studies and Office of Community Relations will host a South Side Restaurant Tour, Saturday, Oct. 5 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The tour will include La Libertad Pupuseria and Italo’s Mexican Restaurant. Registration is required. 

Daysi Carreto '14, Assistant Director of Communication and Civic Engagement at the University highlights the dual benefits of this event. 

“The event provides an opportunity for students to sample delicious Hispanic/Latinx cuisine while also learning more about the Hispanic/Latinx community in Scranton,” said Carreto. We are coordinating details for an academic component this year that will include insights from local community leaders and organizations working with the Hispanic/Latinx Community.” 

The University of Scranton will collaborate with the Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine to host Hispanic/Latinx Voices: Screening and Panel Discussion, Monday, Oct. 21 at 6:30 p.m. at Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine, 525 Pine St., Main Auditorium. The University of Scranton Department of Athletics is now accepting nominations for the Wall of Fame Class of 2025.

The University's Wall of Fame was founded in 1970 to honor former student-athletes, coaches, and administrators, as well as members of the local community, who have been instrumental in the development and success of the University's athletics programs.

For a former student-athlete to be eligible, at least 10 years must have passed since his or her class graduated from the University. Former student-athletes whose class graduated in 2015 or earlier are eligible for the Class of 2025.
