University Students Earn Service Awards
Thirteen University of Scranton students have been awarded the Scholars in Service to Pennsylvania Award for the 2009/2010 academic year. Thirteen University of Scranton students have been awarded the Scholars in Service to Pennsylvania Award. This award honors those vowing to complete 450 hours of individual service in the community throughout the calendar year.
The students, who range from sophomores through seniors, will offer time and services to local agencies in the Scranton community, including United Neighborhood Centers, Children's Advocacy Center, EOTC Family Matters and Skyview Mentoring.
Students receiving the Scholars in Service to Pennsylvania Award are: Cara Brindley, Downington; Laura Capasso North Bellmore, N.Y.; Danielle Frascella Stirling, N.J.; Maria Marx, Scranton; Elizabeth Pulice, East Greenville; Katherine Samuel, Brooklyn N.Y.; Sylvia Szerszen, East Rutherford, N.J.; Alexander Tomann, Marlboro, N.Y.; Michael Wiencek, Fleetwood; Kimberly Witt, Waymart; Alyssa Wunder, Langhorne; Alicia Yanac, Hazle Township; and Mary Zorechak, Peckville.
The Scholars in Service to Pennsylvania program was created in order to meet Governor Rendell's commitment to improving the quality of life in Pennsylvania through service and education. This program demonstrates a statewide effort to build quality service programs, enhance relationships between college campuses and local communities, and offer Pennsylvania college students the opportunity to serve.
Students who complete the 450 hours of service are awarded the AmeriCorps Education award and receive a partial educational award at the end of their term.
This is the second year that University of Scranton students have been honored with this award.
The University of Scranton has been nationally recognized for its service efforts. Scranton is among the just 119 colleges in the nation earning the highly selective 2008 Community Engagement Classification designated by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. The University of Scranton is among just 140 institutions in the country recognized in a national 2009 "Survey of Best College and University Civic Partnerships." Each year more than 2,850 students perform well over 170,000 service hours.
