Healthy Heart Fair Planned at The Mall at Steamtown
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention name Heart Disease as the leading cause of death in the United States. With February being dubbed “American Heart Month,” The University of Scranton’s Exercise Science Club will bring heart health awareness to area residents at the third annual Healthy Heart Fair. The fair will take place on the second floor at The Mall at Steamtown on Tuesday, Feb. 23, from noon to 3 p.m. and will feature free health screenings, interactive educational games and giveaways.
Several of the Jesuit university’s student organizations will participate in this year’s event including the Registered Nurses Association that will perform free blood pressure screenings, and the Community Health Education Club that will have information regarding the benefits of using a pedometer. The Physical Therapy Club will present information about the warning signs of a heart attack and Phi Epsilon Kappa, the Honor Society for Exercise Science majors, will have interactive educational games. The Student Occupational Therapy Association will be present information about energy conservation techniques for cardiac or respiratory conditions to promote optimal activity. The Men’s and Women’s Crew Teams will demonstrate proper exercise techniques on workout machines.
The University of Scranton’s Healthy Heart Fair began as an assigned project on worksite health promotion for an Exercise Science class two years ago. Moderated by Exercise Science and Sport Instructor Paul Cutrufello, Ph.D. cand., the fair has since grown into the Exercise Science Club’s largest event.
