For the second year in a row, The University of Scranton has tied for second place among “Master’s Institutions” in the nation for producing Fulbright scholarships for students. The list of just 91 colleges ranked as the nation’s “Top Producers of Fulbright Students” was published in the Oct. 24, 2010, issue of The Chronicle of Higher Education online.

This is the sixth consecutive year Scranton has made this elite ranking. Scranton is one of six Jesuit universities to be cited.

The list ranks colleges based on the number of their students who earned Fulbright fellowships for the 2010/2011 academic year. The colleges are listed in four categories based on their institution type and size. The University of Scranton was among only 14 universities in the nation listed in the “Master’s Institutions” category.

“It is notable that only one master’s-level institution in the country received more Fulbright awards than The University of Scranton,” said Susan Trussler, Ph.D., Scranton’s Fulbright advisor and associate professor of economics/finance.

Five students from the University of Portland, Portland, Ore., earned Fulbright awards, as did four members of The University of Scranton’s class of 2010.

Scranton’s 2010/11 Fulbright scholars are Mary Elise Lynch, Philadelphia, who received a Fulbright scholarship to the Kenya Medical Research Institute in Kisumu, Kenya; Mackenzie Jean Lind, Lancaster, who received a Fulbright scholarship to the University of Helsinki’s Institute of Biomedicine in Helsinki, Finland; Mary Claire Martin, Philadelphia, who received a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship to Indonesia; and Janine Maria Grosso, Woodland Park, N.J., who received a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship to South Korea.

The four are among the 128 Scranton students who have received grants in the competitions administered by the Institute of International Education (Fulbright) and International Rotary since 1972.
