Education for Justice Workshop Aims to Motivate Peace, Nonviolence Efforts

Nov 5, 2010

Sr. Patricia McCarthy, a member of the Congregation of Notre Dame, United States Province, will lead a workshop on Monday, Nov. 15, exploring peaceful conflict solving and one’s capacity to make a difference. Sponsored by The University of Scranton’s Education for Justice Office, Sr. McCarthy’s presentation, “A Chance to Make a Difference,” will prompt attendees to think about their individual life dreams, what obstacles they’re willing to face to achieve them, and the opportunity to create peace. The discussion, which is free of charge and open to the public, will begin at 5:30 p.m. in the Pearn Auditorium of Brennan Hall.

Prior to serving as provincial for the U.S. province of her community, Sr. McCarthy gained an extensive background in peace teaching throughout the world, including places undergoing conflict and war such as North Ireland, Bosnia, Croatia, Vietnam and Japan. She taught elementary and high school in inner-city and rural schools, administered a school for emotionally-disturbed children and worked with abused children. She has administered hundreds of nonviolence workshops in public and private schools. Her book, “The Word of God, The Word of Peace,” won first place for spirituality from the Catholic Press Association in 2003, and she won a second place award from the Catholic Press Association as a columnist in a Catholic publication.

Earlier in the day, Sr. McCarthy will lead a discussion with University of Scranton students about embracing nonviolence as a lifestyle for individuals, families, societies and countries.

The Education for Justice Office promotes justice throughout The University of Scranton community through various programs, lectures and activities. The office wishes to educate students on the importance of justice, so they may act ethically when faced with justice themes in the future.
