University of Scranton Earth Week Events Highlight Green Initiatives
Representatives from area businesses who want to show off their “green” don’t have to wait until next year’s St. Patrick’s Day. The University of Scranton’s Earth Day Fair – set for Tuesday, April 19– provides a venue for local businesses to showcase their green initiatives to area college students and the general public.
The University of Scranton’s Sustainability Task Force has organized a series of events to encourage sustainable practices and initiatives that includes an Earth Day Fair with interactive informational booths, a public lecture, area clean-ups, an environmental art show and electronic recycling.
The Northeast Business Journal, Electric City, the city of Scranton and Scranton Tomorrow have partnered with The University of Scranton for the event.
Area businesses interested in participating in the Earth Day Fair can contact the University’s Provost Office or Scranton Tomorrow for an application. To contact the Provost’s Office, call 570-941-7520.
The Earth Day Fair is free and open to the public.
In addition, Northeast Pennsylvania alumni of the University can join current students for the clean-up on Saturday, April 16, planned in the area near campus, which is one of nearly a dozen sites across the country participating in the annual Alumni Day of Service. Area residents can also hear a keynote address by Peter Bardaglio, Ph.D., senior fellow at Second Nature, a nonprofit organization committed to serving university leaders to create a sustainable campus, on Friday, April 15. He is the co-author of the book “Boldly Sustainable: Hope and Opportunity for Higher Education in the Age of Climate Change,” and a leading advocate for of sustainable practices and ethics in higher education. The lecture, which begins at 10:30 a.m. in the DeNaples Center, is also free of charge.

- $20: older, larger TVs
- FREE: Cell phones and iPods
Air conditioners, humidifiers, stove and anything that is not an electronic item will not be accepted.
