The University of Scranton Plans Political Engagement Week
University of Scranton students, faculty and staff have planned a series of events for Political Engagement Week that includes a film festival that is open to the public, free of charge, on Saturday, Nov. 12, and Sunday, Nov. 13. Among those planning the events are Jean Harris, Ph.D., professor and chair of the Political Science Department; Student Government President Adam Gault ’12 of Philadelphia, and President of the College Democrats Megan Davidovich ’13 of Hazleton.
University of Scranton students, faculty and staff have planned a series of events around the Nov. 8 election to encourage political engagement on campus and off. Political Engagement Week runs from Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 8, through Monday, Nov. 14, and includes events for students, as well as a film festival that is open to the public, free of charge.
The Politics of Our Democracy Film Festival, will take place Saturday, Nov. 12, and Sunday, Nov. 13, in the Pearn Auditorium in Brennan Hall. Josh Fox’s “Gasland,” which won a special jury prize at the Sundance Film Festival and focuses on natural gas drilling, will be shown on Saturday at 3 p.m. Jeff Reichert’s film “Gerrymandering,” which refers to manipulating boundaries of an electoral constituency to gain a political advantage, will be shown on Sunday at 1 p.m. The film festival will close with the 4 p.m. showing of “Uncounted: The New Math of American Elections” by Emmy Award-winning director David Earnhardt. The film festival is co-sponsored by the Lackawanna County League of Women Voters and Pennsylvania Common Cause.
Among the events planned for the University community are a Student Government meeting on Friday, Nov. 11, and a panel discussion on political engagement and the Scranton area with local elected officials and students on Monday, Nov. 14. Among those participating in the panel discussion are Scranton Mayor Chris Doherty, Scranton City Council members Bob McGoff and Pat Rogan, Lackawanna County Commissioners Mike Washo and Bruce Smallacombe, as well as University of Scranton Student Government President Adam Gault ’12 of Philadelphia, College Democrats President Megan Davidovich ’13 of Hazleton and College Republicans President Mike Mulraney ’12 of Berlin, N.J.
Political Engagement Week is a project of Student Government, College Democrats, College Republicans, Debate Society, Young Americans for Liberty, the Department of Political Science, the Office of Community Relations, and the Office of the Associate Provost for Civic Engagement and Academic Mission.
