University’s Student Club Competes for National Classy Award

Jul 18, 2012

The University of Scranton’s Colleges Against Cancer is among the five regional finalists in the east vying for a national Classy Award as the Most Influential College Student or College Organization.

The Classy Awards, presented by StayClassy of San Diego, Calif., have become the largest philanthropic awards ceremony in the country, recognizing the achievements and contributions of nonprofit organizations from across the United States, according to StayClassy’s website.

Nonprofit organizations first participate in regional competitions. Regional winners are selected based on a public vote (50 percent) and the votes of a panel of judges (50 percent). The public can vote for the organizations nominated on the StayClassy Awards website until July 26.

University of Scranton alumnus Gene Talerico ’89, first assistant district attorney for Lackawanna County, is also a finalist is the east region for Volunteer of the Year for his service given to Marley’s Mission.

The University of Scranton’s Colleges Against Cancer held numerous educational events on campus to promote healthy living and raise awareness of different types of cancer. The group also raised $61,973 for the American Cancer Society through the Relay for Life and other fundraisers.

The University’s Urban Beats Dance Crew was also nominated in this award category, but did not move onto the regional competition. During the 2011-2012 academic year, the Urban Beats Dance Crew volunteered at the United Neighborhood Centers (UNC) to provide hip-hop dance lessons to area teens. The children from the UNC performed during Urban Beat’s spring show. Proceeds raised from the show were donated to UNC.

The StayClassy website also has additional information about Colleges Against Cancer and the Urban Beats Dance Crew.

Marley’s Mission, Lake Ariel, won the 2011 Classy Award as the Best New Charity.
