Former NBA Player John Amaechi to Speak at Scranton
Former NBA player John Amaechi will speak at “A Day of Inclusion” event at The University of Scranton on Thursday, Oct. 18, at 7 p.m. in the McIlhenny Ballroom of the DeNaples Center.
The lecture, which is free of charge and open to the public, is an effort to promote an inclusive, culturally competent, and mindful environment, free of bullying and harassment.
Amaechi played professional basketball for the Houston Rockets, Cleveland Cavaliers, Orlando Magic and Utah Jazz before retiring in 2003. His book, “Man in the Middle,” details his difficult journey from an overweight, British bookworm to NBA player while struggling to understand his sexuality in a masculine-driven sports culture.
An experienced psychologist, educator, social entrepreneur and motivational speaker in the United States and Europe, Amaechi is a graduate of Penn State University and is currently working on his Ph.D. in psychology.
