Students and Teachers Receive Rose Kelly Awards

Students at The University of Scranton and their high school teachers who they credit for contributing to their success were recognized at the Rose Kelly Awards ceremony held recently on campus.

The Rose Kelly Award was established by a University of Scranton alumnus, Joseph Wineburgh, Ph.D., to link the efforts of educators to the achievements of college students. The award is presented jointly to a student in each of the University’s colleges who has completed two years at Scranton and to the teacher whom he or she recognizes as having a great impact on his or her life. Students are selected based on exemplary achievement in both academics and general campus involvement.

From the Kania School of Management, Thomas V. Sheehan, Upper Montclair, N.J., nominated his football coach from Glen Ridge High School, Duke Mendez.

An accounting major and dean’s list student, Sheehan is a participant in the University’s Business Leadership Honors Program and is a member of Alpha Lambda Delta (the national honor society for freshmen) and Alpha Sigma Nu (the national Jesuit honor society). He serves as a tutor for the Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence. He was also a member of the varsity baseball team at Scranton.

From the Panuska College of Professional Studies, Corrine Wolff, Clarks Summit, nominated Patricia Healey from Abington Heights High School.

A counseling and human services major and dean’s list student, Wolff is a peer educator for PACT (Promoting Awareness for the College Transition), president of the Counseling and Human Services Association, and luminary chair for the University’s Relay for Life. She also serves on the Counseling and Human Services Advisory Committee. She volunteers with St. Joseph’s mother/infant program and ARC, as well as with the American Cancer Society, serving on the Lackawanna Unit Board, the Relay Advisory Team and as a summer camp counselor at Camp Can Do.

From the College of Arts and Sciences, Olivia A. Haney, Stroudsburg, nominated her teacher from Danville High School, John Keller.

A dean’s list student and Frank O’Hara medal recipient, Haney, is a double major in theology and Spanish with a minor in counseling and human services and a Latin American studies concentration. She participated in the Spanish-language immersion program where she studied at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile and the Universidad Diego Portales. She is involved with University Mission and Ministry and the equestrian team. She also volunteers at the Leahy Community Health and Family Center and serves as chair of the Leahy Center Student Advisory Board.

From the College of Graduate and Continuing Education, Heather Alber, Dingmans Ferry, nominated Susan Briggs from Delaware Valley High School.

Alber is a dean’s list student and Frank O’Hara medal recipient. While at the University, she has volunteered at the Jewish Home of Eastern Pennsylvania and has worked for the Planning and Information Department at Scranton.
