Undergraduates Recognized for Academic Excellence at Class Night

The University of Scranton honored 67 outstanding members of its undergraduate class of 2013 at Class Night on May 24. The awards were given for academic excellence, service or both.

Students with the highest GPA in each of the University’s three undergraduate colleges and the undergraduate program for adults and part-time students in the University’s College of Graduate and Continuing Education were presented Frank J. O’Hara Awards for General Academic Excellence, a memorial to the late administrator who served the University for 53 years.

This year’s O’Hara Award recipients were: Bradley Michael Wierbowski of Owego, N.Y., for the College of Arts and Sciences; Sarah Alicia Lamothe of South Abington Township for the Panuska College of Professional Studies; Chanel Nadja Wright of Pocono Summit for the College of Graduate and Continuing Education; and Laura Ann Cicirelli of Towaco, N.J., and Timothy Patrick McGurrin Jr. of Clarks Summit for the Kania School of Management.

Members of the class of 2103 who received prestigious national scholarships were also recognized, including Wierbowski, who received the Goldwater Scholarship, one of the nation’s most coveted honors in science, mathematics and engineering; and Vivienne Meljen of Scranton, who received the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI) Scholarship and was one of just 62 students in the nation awarded a 2013 Truman Scholarship. Also recognized were the University’s five Fulbright scholarship recipients: Elena M. Habersky of  Dallas; Shannon M. Haberzettl of Dingmans Ferry; Rebecca Schmaeling of Smithtown, N.Y.; Joseph R. Seemiller of Lehighton; and Jan Alexander Wessel of Drums.

In addition, students were honored for outstanding academic achievement in their fields of study.
