Students Discover Where They Are Needed at Volunteer Fair

More than 800 University students learned about service opportunities offered at more than 60 local nonprofit organizations at the University’s Center for Service and Social Justice’s annual volunteer fair, held Sept. 10 on campus.
Opportunities for students ranged from trail clean ups at the Lackawanna River Heritage Trail to delivering food for Meals on Wheels to helping at events such as Scranton’s inaugural half marathon or the Tour de Scranton bicycle race. Students could volunteer to work with 3 to 5 year-old children at local Head Start Learning Centers to help with programing that includes reading to children, arts and crafts, exercise and other activities. These are just a few of the service opportunities available.
Each year more than 2,800 University students perform well over 170,000 service hours, much of it through local organizations. The University has been nationally recognized for its service efforts and has been named to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll.
The Center for Service and Social Justice informs students and student clubs interested in service projects of volunteer opportunities that exist at local organizations.
