Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Service Locations and Dates, 2015

Jan 28, 2015

The University of Scranton and a group of local human service organizations led by the United Way of Lackawanna and Wayne Counties will assist low and moderate income individuals and families from the area in completing and filing their federal, state and local tax returns through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program.

The free service is offered by accounting student volunteers from The University of Scranton and professional volunteers organized by United Way to area residents earning less than $51,000 in 2014. The service is provided on campus and at multiple locations in Lackawanna and Wayne counties in February and March.

Residents using the VITA service are asked to bring the following items: a valid photo ID; all W2 Forms; all 1099 forms (interest, dividends, pensions); real estate tax receipts; Form 8332 for non-custodial parents; Social Security numbers or Individual Tax Identification Numbers (ITIN) for all taxpayers and dependents; W-7 forms if appropriate; information related to income and expenses (business, rental properties, sale of stocks); a personal banking account check if direct deposit is desired; and any documentation related to health insurance for themselves and anyone on the tax return in 2014. Last year’s tax returns are also requested.

The full list of locations for the service and hours of operation is below and also available by visiting www.uwlc.net. Appointments cannot be made for the weekday walk-in service at the University. Appointments are required at other locations and can be made online at  www.uwlc.net or by calling 570-504-0614.

VITA program partners are The University of Scranton, The United Way of Lackawanna and Wayne Counties, United Neighborhood Centers of NEPA, the Lackawanna County Library System, the Consumer Credit Counseling of NEPA and the IRS.

University of Scranton accounting students have participated in the VITA program for more than 20 years. In the last six years, VITA program volunteers have prepared nearly 11,000 tax returns with more than $1 million in fee savings for the tax clients.
