University of Scranton Professor Named PwC Accounting Research Chair

University of Scranton Accounting Professor Brian W. Carpenter, Ph.D., CMA, has been named as the first PwC (PriceWaterhouseCoopers) Accounting Research Chair at the University.
University of Scranton Accounting Professor Brian W. Carpenter, Ph.D., CMA, has been named as the first PwC (PriceWaterhouseCoopers) Accounting Research Chair at the University.

The University of Scranton has named Accounting Professor Brian W. Carpenter, Ph.D., CMA, as the inaugural PwC (PricewaterhouseCoopers) LLP Accounting Research Chair. Dr. Carpenter has been associated with the University since the late 1970s. An alumnus of the University, he previously taught at Pennsylvania State University and Lehigh University. In 1987 he returned to The University of Scranton, where he has served in various capacities ever since.

The PwC Accounting Research Chair was established in 2015 by Scranton alumni associated with PwC to recognize and support excellence in accounting research at the University. The effort was spearheaded by Paul Lameo, a PwC Partner in Banking and Capital Markets, a 1994 graduate of the University and a member of the University’s President’s Business Counsel and Alumni Board of Governors. 

Dr. Carpenter has co-authored two textbooks and has published more than 50 articles in numerous professional and academic journals, including Accounting Organizations and Society, Accounting Horizons, The CPA Journal, Strategic Finance, Management Accounting Quarterly, The Internal Auditor, Internal Auditing, the Journal of Accounting Education, the Pennsylvania CPA Journal, the Journal of Applied Business Research, and the Journal of Business and Economics Research. He is a co-recipient of several recent Institute of Management Accounting’s Lybrand awards recognizing research excellence, most recently receiving its bronze award in 2014 and its silver award in 2015. He is presently engaged in several ongoing research projects involving various financial accounting, auditing, and pedagogical topics.

Dr. Carpenter has also received numerous teaching awards throughout his distinguished career. In 1990 he was named as The University of Scranton’s Alpha Sigma Nu Professor of the Year. In 1997 he was selected as Pennsylvania’s Accounting Professor of the Year by the Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants. In 2002 he was selected as Scranton’s CASE Professor of the Year. In 2008 he was a recipient of the University’s Provost Excellence Award for the Scholarship of Teaching.

Dr. Carpenter holds a MBA from The University of Scranton as well as a bachelor’s degree and doctorate in accounting from the Pennsylvania State University.
