Wikipedia Edit-a-thon Seeks Female Contributors

Mar 4, 2016

Less than 10 percent of Wikipedia contributors are female, according to a 2011 Wikimedia survey. As a result, many entries on notable women in history are absent from this repository. An international edit-a-thon effort seeks to address Wikipedia’s gender gap by encouraging female editorship.

The University of Scranton Weinberg Memorial Library will participate by hosting the 3rd annual Art + Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon on Saturday, March 5, from noon to 4 p.m. in the Weinberg Memorial Library.

At the event, which is free of charge, new editors will learn how Wikipedia articles are created, shared and audited.

Participants will be able to use workstations in the library’s computer lab, but since space is limited, participants are encouraged to bring laptops as well.

Last year, more than 1,500 participants at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, along with more than 75 node events around the world, created nearly 400 new pages and improved 500 articles on Wikipedia.
