University of Scranton Professor Recognized for Excellence in Counseling Leadership and Scholarship

Julie Cerrito, Ph.D., assistant professor and director of the school counseling program in the Department of Counseling and Human Services at The University of Scranton, received the Edwin L. Herr Fellowship for Excellence in Counseling Leadership and Scholarship Award from Chi Sigma Iota, the international counseling academic and professional honor society. The award, presented at the American Counseling Association’s 2017 Annual Conference and Expo, recognizes a full-time counselor educator in the early stages of his or her career whose professional goals include career development or international issues in counseling.

The Herr Fellowship was created to recognize and honor the career contributions of Dr. Edwin L. Herr to Chi Sigma Iota and to the counseling profession as a whole. Dr. Herr’s career as a counselor and counselor educator spanned more than 50 years. He is widely recognized globally as one of the preeminent scholars in career counseling.

Dr. Cerrito is a national certified counselor and school counselor. She also holds an approved clinical supervisor credential. She currently serves as the faculty advisor for the Chi Delta Rho Chapter of Chi Sigma Iota at Scranton.

Dr. Cerrito’s research and scholarship focuses on access, equity and advocacy in addressing the college and career readiness needs of underserved PK-12 youth in school systems. She has been part of former First Lady Michelle Obama’s National Reach Higher Initiative since its inception in 2014 by participating in the annual White House Convening as a representative for counselor educators and school counselors across the state of Pennsylvania. In addition, she currently serves as the co-chair for professional school counselors on the Pennsylvania College and Career Readiness Consortium.

Dr. Cerrito earned her bachelor’s degree from Bloomsburg University, her master’s degree from The University of Scranton and her Ph.D. from Pennsylvania State University.
