Faculty Member Wins Nursing Education Award

        The Pennsylvania State Nurses Association (PSNA) presented Marian L. Farrell, Ph.D., professor of nursing at The University of Scranton, with its 2009 Nursing Education Award. This prestigious award recognizes a member of PSNA who contributes to the advancement of nursing education and demonstrates strength of character, commitment and competence. The recipient is selected by peer members of the association.

        Dr. Farrell joined the nursing faculty at The University of Scranton in 1990. In addition to serving as an educator and role model, the award also recognizes Dr. Farrell for her community involvement. She is the vice-president of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Northeastern Pennsylvania Affiliate and has served previously as its president and board member. She is a member of several professional nursing organizations at the local, state, and national level and has served as the past president and board member of District 4 of the PA SNA.

         Dr. Farrell, Clarks Summit, earned her doctorate in nursing from Adelphi University. She earned a master's degree from Syracuse University and a master's degree and bachelor's degree in nursing from Misericordia University. She earned a post-master's certificate in psychiatric mental health nursing as a nurse practitioner from Drexel University and a post-master's certificate in health care of women as a nurse practitioner from the University of Pennsylvania. She maintains numerous nursing certifications and is in clinical practice as a nurse practitioner with Matthew Berger, M.D.

        The 2009 Nursing Education Award was presented to Dr. Farrell on Oct. 23 at a ceremony at DeSales University, Center Valley.
