University of Scranton Hosts Community Christmas Day Breakfast

Dec 2, 2009

Friends and family can always lend comfort in troubled times. That was the inspiration for The University of Scranton and ARAMARK to hold their first Community Christmas Day Breakfast.

"We have seen so many families struggling to make ends meet this year that we believe many may not be able to afford a special meal on Christmas Day," said Pat Vaccaro, director of the university's Community Outreach Office. "We wanted to offer families a place where they can have that special meal and not worry about the cost."

The breakfast fare will be provided by ARAMARK and will be offered free of charge to those attending.

"At this time of year, we recognize that we are blessed at The University of Scranton. It is our privilege to be able to give back to the community in this way - on Christmas Day," said Ted Zayac, associate resident district manager at The University of Scranton for ARAMARK.

Vaccaro also sees the breakfast as a place for someone to come to if they are alone this holiday season.

"We are a community, a group of friends. You don't have to be alone on Christmas morning. Join us," said Vaccaro.

ARAMARK staff, as well as volunteers from The University of Scranton, will prepare and serve the breakfast.

"I have no doubt that members of the University community and their families will volunteer for this event," said Vaccaro, who noted some Scranton students plan to return to campus to serve at this event.

The breakfast will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on Christmas Day, Dec. 25, 2009, on the third floor of the Patrick and Margaret DeNaples Center on campus. Although reservations are not required, those planning to attend are asked to call 941-4094.

"Since this is the first year we are doing this, we don't really know how many people to expect. In order to be prepared, we are asking those who plan to attend to call in advance with a count," said Zayac.

Vaccaro and Zayac are finalizing plans for the event, including the menu and a possible visit from Santa.
