The University of Scranton’s Schemel Forum will mark the 200th anniversary of the birth of classical composer Robert Schumann (1810-1856) with a recital by pianist Jeanette Micklem, one of Zimbabwe’s leading musical artists. The performance will take place on Sunday, April 18, at 5 p.m. in the Houlihan-McLean Center.

A German composer of the Romantic period, Schumann’s compositions often adopt a “free poetic style.” His most famous pieces are for the piano.

Micklem grew up in Zimbabwe and, after earning degrees from London University, the British Royal Schools of Music and the Royal College of Music in London, she returned to her African homeland. There she earned acclaim as a performer, accompanist and teacher, and has since performed throughout Africa and around the globe. Her extensive repertoire includes 18 composers and 27 different works.

A “meet the artist” reception will follow Micklem’s recital, entitled “A Schumann Recital: On the 200th Anniversary of his Birth and Insights into Zimbabwe from an Artist’s Perspective.”

Micklem’s concert is free to Schemel Forum members. Tickets for non-members are $20 for individuals and $30 for couples. Reservations are suggested.
