The University of Scranton Celebrates National AmeriCorps Week
Thirteen University of Scranton students participated in the Scholars in Service to Pennsylvania program for the 2009/2010 academic year. The University of Scranton celebrated National AmeriCorps Week (May 8-15) by hosting an event for approximately 30 children and young adults in the autistic support classes from the North Pocono School District. The event enabled these students to “buy” items from a store and order food from a menu. Urban Beats, a University of Scranton student hip-hop dance club, and Vince Brust of Vince Brust Studios provided dance instruction. The event was organized by The University of Scranton’s Scholars in Service.
Currently, 13 Scranton students participate in the Scholars in Service to Pennsylvania program run by AmeriCorps. The program rewards college students who contribute either 450 hours or 300 hours of service to their community during one calendar year.
In addition to the special event for children with autism, each of Scranton’s 2009/2010 Scholars in Service participants primarily focused service hours with one local agency. Area agencies where the scholars volunteered include United Neighborhood Centers, EOTC Family Matters, the Boy Scouts of America and Big Brothers/Big Sisters.

This is the second year that University of Scranton students have participated in this program.
