The University of Scranton Publishes 2011 Economic and Community Impact Report
The University of Scranton presented the city of Scranton with its annual voluntary contribution of $175,000 for 2011. The University of Scranton has released its 2011 economic and community impact report, highlighting the quantitative and qualitative impact that the nationally recognized Jesuit university has on the region.
The report includes the University’s voluntary contributions, job creation, student spending, student volunteer service, University/downtown collaboration projects, community health and education programs, improvements in the Mulberry Street corridor, construction and employee-related fees and taxes, and other programs. Additionally, the report uses established economic impact studies and formulas, including those used by the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Pennsylvania, to quantify the University’s economic impact based on general expenditures, which in Northeastern Pennsylvania for 2010-2011 is estimated at more than $386 million.
As of the fall of 2011, the University employed 916 full-time faculty and staff, and an additional 291 part-time employees, serving an enrollment of more than 6,000 undergraduate and graduate students. In addition, the University’s Small Business Development Center assisted 163 clients, students have volunteered more than 175,000 hours, and programs at the Leahy Community Health and Family Center provided care to more than 1,200 patients.
Although The University of Scranton meets or exceeds all requirements for tax
exemption in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, the University provides an unrestricted, voluntary contribution of $175,000 to the city of Scranton and $58,500 to Lackawanna County. In addition, the University paid more than $589,000 in 2011 through wage taxes of employees living in the city, local service tax on University employees, local service tax on ARAMARK and Follett employees, and mercantile tax paid to the city and school district by ARAMARK and Follett.
