University of Scranton Earth Week Events Highlight Green Initiatives
The University of Scranton has organized a series of events to commemorate Earth Week 2012, including an Environmental Art Show featuring student, staff can faculty art and photography concerning environmental themes. The exhibit is on display in the Heritage Room of the Weinberg Memorial Library through Wednesday, April 25.
From an environmental art display to hands-on cleanups to opportunities for businesses to showcase their “green” initiatives, The University of Scranton has organized a series of events to commemorate Earth Week 2012.
“Sustaining Scranton: Go Green and Save Green,” organized by the University’s Sustainability Task Force, with support of the City of Scranton and Scranton Tomorrow, began this week with hundreds of students and alumni participating in a street sweep of the area surrounding campus and a downtown beautification project involving planting flowers in more than 50 downtown city planters. In addition to the University’s support, Home Depot and Lowe’s in Dickson City and the Mulberry Bush in Scranton provided donations and discounts for the planting project.
In addition, through Wednesday, April 25, the University will host an Environmental Art Show featuring student, staff can faculty art and photography concerning environmental themes. The exhibit is on display in the Heritage Room of the Weinberg Memorial Library during library hours. An opening reception for the Environmental Art Show was held April 16.
Businesses and other organizations will promote sustainable products at the Fair Trade Vendors’ Fair on Friday, April 20, from 1 to 5 p.m. The fair will take place on the Dionne Campus Green.
Students and faculty will join representatives from area businesses to present interactive games, posters and displays to give visitors information about the environment, sustainable practices and faculty/student projects related to environmental issues. The Earth Day Fair will take place on the DeNaples Center patio on Tuesday, April 24, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The University’s Earth Week activities will conclude on Monday, April 30, with a lecture by William Brady, a University of Scranton alumnus and trustee, and president and CEO of Mascoma Corporation, a renewable fuels company with headquarters in Waltham, Mass.
The lecture will begin at 6 p.m. in the Moskovitz Theater of the DeNaples Center.
All of the Earth Week events are open to the public, free of charge.
