University Students Organize Run/Walk to Benefit Scranton Police Department ‘Heroes’

Nov 14, 2012

University of Scranton students have organized a 5K “Heroes for Heroes” Run/Walk to raise funds for the Scranton Police Department and canned goods for victims of Hurricane Sandy.

The run/walk will take place on Saturday, Nov. 17, at 10 a.m. on the University’s campus. Participants are encouraged to dress as their favorite superhero.

“Since the officers of the Scranton Police Department are considered local heroes, we are calling the run/walk ‘Heroes for Heroes,’ said Alexandra Cognetti ’14 of Fort Washington, who is among the students organizing the event as a civic engagement project for a senior seminar class taught by Communication Professor Jan Kelly, Ph.D. According to the organizers, the University students wanted to demonstrate their appreciation of the contribution the Scranton Police Department makes to the city.

The registration fee of $5 will be donated to the Scranton Police Department. Participants are also encouraged to bring a canned good, which will be donated to the Hurricane Sandy relief effort.

Registration will be accepted on Saturday from 9:30 to 10 a.m. at the base of the Commons on the corner of Linden Street and Monroe Avenue, or on Wednesday, Nov. 14, from noon to 1 p.m. at the DeNaples Center.

Students organizing the event are Cognetti, Holli Bott ’14 of Dickson City, Timothy Gottschalk ’14 of Southampton, Deanna Giorno ’14 of Warrington, and Emily Nohilly ’14 of Lynbrook, N.Y.
