University of Scranton Student Selected for Highly-Competitive Summer Research Program

Jul 24, 2014

Brittany Boribong of Pataskala, Ohio, a senior majoring in biomathematics at The University of Scranton, has been selected for a highly-competitive Summer Research Experience (SRE) for Undergraduates and Teachers program offered by The National Institute for Mathematical and Biological Synthesis (NIMBioS) at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Tennessee.

The 2014 NIMBioS SRE program runs for eight weeks during the summer and includes just two high school teachers and only 18 undergraduates selected from universities from across the United States. Participants work in teams with NIMBioS post-doctoral researchers and University of Tennessee faculty on research at the interface of mathematics and biology. Projects range from modeling Argentine ant super-colonies to tracking facial expressions and conscious experience of emotion.

At The University of Scranton, Boribong is a member of Alpha Lambda Delta, the national honor society of freshmen, and serves as vice president of the Jesuit university’s Mathematics Club.

NIMBioS is a National Science Foundation-sponsored initiative to foster interdisciplinary research at the interface between mathematical and biological sciences. Additional NIMBioS sponsors include the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
