University Offers Programs for Elementary, Middle and High School Students

Area elementary, middle and high school students can test their science, physics, math, art and writing skills at several academic competitions scheduled at The University of Scranton during the academic Year. Students can also visit the University for programs in the arts or for a ‘behind the scenes’ look at the displays and laboratories of the University’s Loyola Science Center.

Competitions for high school students include the Brain Bee for neuroscience, Women’s History Month Essay competition, Computer Science Programming Contest, Kane Competition for physics and engineering, and the Integration Bee for mathematics. For elementary, middle and high school students, competitions include the Stock Market Game and the Earth Day essay competition and art contest.

In addition to the competitions, educational programs for area school children are offered through the University’s theatre program, art gallery and performance music program, as well as educational tours of the Loyola Science Center and other enrichment programs.

At The University of Scranton’s 2014 Kane Competition, North Pocono High School students Marissa Wolfe and Scott Lougee, who place second in the individual competition, finalize calculations needed to “free themselves” in the “Captured! Mad Scientist” contest. The annual competition tests high school students’ knowledge of physics and engineering through a series of tests and interactive challenges. The theme of 2014 competition was “Invention Island,” based on the hit “Survivor” TV show.  The team placed third out of the 24 teams participating.
