Acclaimed Violist and His Quartet Perform Music by Mozart, Schubert and Others
Andrew Gonzalez and Friends will be performing music by Mozart, Schubert, Schumann and Dvorak on Saturday, Oct. 18, at 7:30 in the Houlihan McLean Center at The University of Scranton. Admission is free and the performance is open to the public.
Acclaimed violist Andrew Gonzalez will be joined by his quartet for a concert presented by Performance Music at The University of Scranton on Saturday, Oct. 18, at 7:30 p.m. in the University’s Houlihan McLean Center (corner of Mulberry St. & Jefferson Ave.). Admission to the concert is free and open to the public. Doors open at 6:40 p.m. and seating is on a first-come, first-seated basis.
Members of the quartet are Gonzalez, violinist Yurie Mitsuhashi, cellist Jiyoung Lee, and pianist Christine Wu. The program for the evening’s performance will include music by Mozart, Schubert, Schumann and Dvorak.
In addition, Gonzalez will offer a free masterclass for string players earlier that afternoon. Interested string players from high school age through adult can register for participation in the masterclass by emailing music@scranton.edu or calling (570) 941-7624.
As an avid chamber musician and soloist, Gonzalez has collaborated with world-class musicians such as Itzhak Perlman, Daniel Phillips, Shmuel Ashkenasi, Nobuko Imai, Amit Peled, and Edward Arron. He recently joined Itzhak Perlman and alumni of the Perlman Music Program in a chamber concert at the Van Wezel Performing Arts Center in Sarasota and gave a recital at the Clark Arts Center in Shelter Island, New York. Gonzalez was soloist of the Juilliard Orchestra in Don Quixote under the direction of Maestro Leonard Slatkin. He has participated in summer programs such as Music@Menlo, the Perlman Music Program, the Heifetz Institute, the Sarasota Music Festival, the Perlman Chamber Workshop and many others. He is a graduate of The Juilliard School and is currently pursuing a master’s degree there under the direction of world-renowned violists Michael Tree and Steven Tenenbom.
Mitsuhashi has performed in many of the most respected concert venues such as Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall, Merkin Hall, Steinway Hall, Barge Music, and Severance Hall. She has performed in a Heifetz International Institute Celebrity Series Concert. A graduate of The Juilliard School, she is currently pursuing her master’s degree at the Yale School of Music.
Lee has performed as a soloist with orchestras both in the U.S. and abroad, and has won numerous prizes and awards in national and international competitions. She earned an undergraduate degree from the Curtis Institute of Music and a master’s degree at The Juilliard School. She is currently enrolled in the Artist Diploma Program at The Juilliard School under the tutelage of Joel Krosnick.
Wu holds her bachelor’s degree from The Juilliard School, and is currently pursuing a master’s degree there. She has performed as soloist with a number of U.S. orchestras, and won awards and honors in a wide variety of piano competitions. Wu performs frequently in both solo and chamber recitals in Lincoln Center and various other concert series in and around New York. She has performed in several international music festivals, including the International Mendelssohn-Akademie in Leipzig.
