Jazz Band Provides Back-to-School Soundtrack (VIDEO)

The unmistakable sounds of rolling suitcases, echoing laughter and cheering orientation leaders mark the return of college students nationwide.
The University of Scranton’s soundtrack is a bit more musical with the inclusion of drumbeats, instrumental solos and more courtesy of its Jazz Band.
Under the direction of Cheryl Boga, conductor and director of performance music, the University’s Jazz Band performed numerous melodies during the afternoon of Saturday, Aug. 23, at First-Year Move-In. The concert was held along the walkway between the DeNaples Center and the Dionne Green, where thousands of students and their families saw and heard them playing.
“Every year, we prep for move in and come in a few days early,” said Liam Gronwall ’26, a finance major from Sidney, New York. “We rehearse and pull together about 30 songs. Then, we play them for all the new kids moving in. It’s a good time to get our chops back and show everybody what we’re all about.”
The performance also serves as a recruitment tool for the Jazz Band, which has an upcoming concert Saturday, Oct. 25, at the Houlihan McLean Center. The show will feature guest soloist Marion Felder, who recently toured with Michael Buble.
