Incoming Class Sets Numerous Records at Scranton

        The University of Scranton's incoming class is one for the record books.

        The undergraduate Class of 2013 at about 1,040 students is the largest class in the history of the Jesuit university, surpassing the previous record of 1,030 set just two years ago by the Class of 2011. But, that is not all. The Class of 2013 was drawn from a record number of applicants and has a record number of legacy students (students with a Scranton alumnus parent). When combined with graduate students starting this fall, the incoming class also has the largest number of international students.

        In addition to the undergraduate class, Scranton will also welcome more than 55 transfer students and about 260 new graduate students this weekend.

        The entering undergraduate students were drawn from 8,028 applicants, which is the first time the applicant pool surpassed 8,000. This marks the eighth consecutive year that Scranton has set a record for undergraduate applications for admission. This represents an increase of 1.7 percent over applications received last year and more than doubles the 2001 totals for applications received.

        The Class of 2013 class has an average SAT score of 1,127 and includes 14 valedictorians and salutatorians, many of whom represent local high schools including Coughlin, Holy Cross, Lakeland, Mid-Valley, Scranton, Scranton Prep, West Scranton and Valley View. Incoming students represent 408 high schools, 16 states, Ireland and China. Majors showing the largest growth are biochemistry, computer science, criminal justice, political science, occupational therapy and business administration.

        The Class of 2013 includes 101 legacy children of University of Scranton alumni, including 20 legacy students from alumni couples.

        The University of Scranton has also seen its graduate enrollment nearly triple over the past six years through Web-based and off-campus course offerings and new campus-based degree offerings such as the doctorate in physical therapy. Incoming students to the university's graduate programs represent more than a dozen states and include about 45 international students representing more than a dozen foreign countries. Incoming graduate students include a Fulbright scholar from Oman and five Fulbright teaching assistantship scholars from France, Mexico, Japan, Bahrain and China.
