Scenic Scranton Packaged for Display at Gallery Exhibit
Most people recognize the Statue of Liberty, the Washington Monument and Mount Rushmore as well-known sites in the United States. Andrés Alvarez, an artist from Medellin, Columbia, sought a different view of American culture and landscape. His new collection of mixed media paintings, which will be on display at The University of Scranton's Hope Horn Gallery beginning Sept. 14, portrays places like Scranton's Nay Aug Park as the quintessential America.

University of Scranton President Rev. Scott R. Pilarz, S.J., Ph.D., has announced 16 faculty promotions, including tenure decisions, effective at the beginning of the 2009-2010 academic year.
Interdependence Day Performance At Scranton
On Wednesday, September 16, in celebration of Interdependence Day, The University of Scranton will present a special musical event entitled "All You Have To Do Is Listen." The presentation features internationally renowned composer, commentator, author and conductor Rob Kapilow, along with Magdalyn E. Boga, soprano, and The University of Scranton Concert Choir. The event begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Houlihan McLean Center (corner of Mulberry Street and Jefferson Avenue), and is presented by Scranton's Department of Performance Music with support from the Office of the Provost and the Office of Equity and Diversity. Admission is free and open to the public.
Overflow Crowd Welcomes Class of 2013 at Convocation
An overflow crowd of more than 2,000 parents and families joined with members of The University of Scranton community to welcome formally the largest incoming undergraduate class in the Jesuit school's history at the New Student Convocation on Saturday, Aug. 22, at the Byron Recreation Complex.

Schemel Forum Advisory Committee

Foreign Languages Professor Receives Prestigious Fulbright
Joseph Wilson, Ph.D., professor of world languages and cultures at The University of Scranton, has been awarded a one-year faculty Fulbright to Kazakhstan in Central Asia beginning in the fall. This is the second faculty Fulbright for Dr. Wilson, whose first Fulbright took him to Albania in 2003.
Research on Antioxidants Found in Snack Foods and Cereal Presented
University of Scranton Chemistry Professor Joe Vinson, Ph.D., presented research on the amount of healthful antioxidant substances, called polyphenols, found in snack foods and whole grain cereals at the 238th annual national meeting of the American Chemical Society, which took place this week in Washington D.C.

The University of Scranton President's Business Council will present John A. Walsh, executive vice president and executive editor of ESPN, Inc., with the President's Medal.
