On Wednesday, September 16, in celebration of Interdependence Day, The University of Scranton will present a special musical event entitled "All You Have To Do Is Listen." The presentation features internationally renowned composer, commentator, author and conductor Rob Kapilow, along with Magdalyn E. Boga, soprano, and The University of Scranton Concert Choir. The event begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Houlihan McLean Center (corner of Mulberry Street and Jefferson Avenue), and is presented by Scranton's Department of Performance Music with support from the Office of the Provost and the Office of Equity and Diversity. Admission is free and open to the public.

Interdependence Day was created post-9/11 as a symbol of regeneration, to reflect on the realities of interdependence and set out to build constructively, civically and culturally a global civil society.

"Part of the mission of Interdependence Day is to challenge the direction of many of the world's current ineffective and/or destructive choices in dealing with conflict, by helping to encourage effective dialogue in support of the expansion of our own skills and choices for facing conflict in our organizations and lives," said Cheryl Boga, director of Performance Music at The University of Scranton. "Kapilow's presentation will be focused on using musical analogies to model the development of active and informed listening skills, a most basic component of all effective communication."

Kapilow has garnered popular and critical acclaim for his extensive body of work, including his long-running "What Makes It Great" series of "informances," which combine musical performances with audience education and involvement. His book "All You Have To Do Is Listen" won the 2008 PROSE Award in the category of Music and the Performing Arts.

Kapilow's very first composition, "Borba," was commissioned by The University of Scranton Bands in 1985, and Kapilow served as commencement speaker and received an honorary doctorate at the University's 2009 commencement.

Magdalyn Boga, a native of the Scranton area, is a 2008 honors graduate of Duquesne University, where she studied English, Vocal Performance and History, and is currently a graduate student in History at The University of Scranton. A lyric soprano and a student of renowned Bulgarian baritone Guenko Guechev and Chinese mezzo-soprano Xiu-Ru Liu, she has performed and studied a wide variety of musical styles in a diverse array of languages, including Russian, Czech, Italian, French, German, English  and Latin.

The University of Scranton Concert Choir is a 75 member mixed chorus made up of students from majors spanning the curriculum - ranging from Neuroscience through Philosophy - "all sharing a common love of music and the desire to communicate through this universal language," said Boga.
