Orientation Begins for Scranton’s Class of 2015

Jul 11, 2011
In his first official act as the president of The University of Scranton, Rev. Kevin P. Quinn, S.J., welcomed incoming students of Scranton’s class of 2015 and their parents and guests at orientation.

Remarking on the common bond he shares with the incoming class, Father Quinn reassured the students and their families that they, too, will soon experience firsthand the warmth and support that he did when preparing to take office as the 25th president of the University.

“Experience the University fully over the next four years,” Father Quinn advised students of the class of 2015, telling them of the spiritual and academic richness of the more than 450-year tradition of Jesuit education they will experience at Scranton.

Participants were greeted by a host of University administrators; student orientation leaders Patrick Cassidy ’13, Maria Marx ’12 and Colin Holmes ’13; and dozens of “purple people” – student orientation assistants – all focused on helping students and their families smoothly transition to Scranton. Orientation is designed to introduce new students and their families to the University’s procedures, facilities and support services, and to provide them with the opportunity to meet with faculty, administrators, staff – and each other.

At the July orientation sessions, students completed chemistry, mathematics, foreign language and composition placement tests for incoming students. They also met academic advisors, attended presentations on support services and extracurricular activities, and participated in recreational and social activities.

Parents and guests learned about the new role they will now play as parents of a college student through a session called “Transitions” by Vincent Carilli, Ph.D., vice president for student affairs at Scranton. They also met with academic deans and administrators and learned about the resources and programs offered by University Ministries, Information Resources, Financial Aid and other departments at Scranton. Participants could even attend a session about the city called “Scranton 101.”

At orientation, students also got the first glimpse of the make-up of their class. Members of the class of 2015 represent 16 states, as well as Ireland and China. The class includes nine valedictorians and six salutatorians. The most common birthday is May 27 – shared by eight students. The most common name is Michael (28) for males and Lauren (15) for females. The class also includes five sets of twins.

Members of the class of 2015 and their parents attend one of four orientation sessions in July. The entire class will assemble on campus for the first time at Fall Welcome on Aug. 27.
