Performance Music at Scranton Presents The Kyle Athayde Dance Party

Sep 19, 2012

Performance Music at The University of Scranton will open its 2012-2013 season with the Kyle Athayde Dance Party! on Sunday, Sept. 23, at 3 p.m. in the McIlhenny Ballroom of the DeNaples Center. Admission is free and open to the public and attendees are encouraged to “bring their dancing shoes,” said Cheryl Y. Boga, director of performance music at Scranton.

The performance will feature swing, Latin and funk dance music from “one of New York City’s hottest big bands,” said Boga, who noted that the 18-piece ensemble features many of the most accomplished young players of this genre. “There will also be seating for those who prefer to watch and listen rather than dance.”

Athayde is a composer, arranger, performer, teacher and bandleader currently living in New York City. His instrumental talents include playing the vibraphone, piano, trumpet and drums professionally, in addition to the congas, timbales, bass, bass clarinet, sousaphone and vocal percussion. He also composes and arranges music in multiple genres, including jazz, classical, salsa and electronic.

In addition to performing, Athayde teaches at a variety of camps and workshops. During his time working at the Sitka Fine Arts Camp, he studied and performed many forms of dance, theater, acrobatics and juggling.
