University of Scranton Announces New Faculty Members
The University of Scranton has appointed 26 new full-time faculty members for the 2014-2015 academic year.
Danielle Arigo, Ph.D., was named assistant professor of psychology. She most recently was a postdoctoral research fellow at Drexel University in Philadelphia. She earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Drexel and a master’s degree and doctorate in clinical psychology (health emphasis) from Syracuse University. She completed an American Psychological Association-accredited internship (primary focus in behavioral medicine) at the Syracuse VA Medical Center and taught at Syracuse and Drexel. She also is a licensed psychologist in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Her research, which focuses on the interplay between emotional and physical health, has been published in several scientific journals.
Jinghan Cai, Ph.D., was named assistant professor of economics and finance. He holds a doctorate in economics from Boston College, a doctorate in finance from City University of Hong Kong and a bachelor’s degree in finance from Renmin University of China. Dr. Cai was previously employed by Shenzhen Stock Exchange and by Bank of China. His teaching interests include investment, corporate finance, financial markets, statistics and econometrics.
Andreas D. Christopoulos, Ph.D., was named assistant professor of economics and finance. Dr. Christopoulos received his doctorate in quantitative finance and statistics from Rutgers University in 2014 and previously taught for New York University. Prior to joining the academic community, he held senior positions in the financial services industry. Dr. Christopoulos received his MBA from Cornell University and his AB from Vassar College.
Michael M. Costello, J.D., was named faculty specialist in health administration and human resources. He previously worked for more than 25 years as a vice president at Moses Taylor Health Care System and has taught for many years as an adjunct instructor at The University of Scranton, The Commonwealth Medical College, Marywood University, Misericordia University, Keystone College and the University of Central Florida. Costello earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from The University of Scranton, a master’s in mass communication from Ohio University, an MBA in marketing from The University of Scranton, and a juris doctorate from Southland University. His work has been published in numerous health care journals.
Ann M. Culp, D.N.P., was named faculty specialist in nursing. She has worked for The University of Scranton’s Nurse Anesthesia program since 1999 and most recently served as assistant program administrator. Culp earned a doctorate in nursing practice and a master’s in nursing from Case Western Reserve University. She received a bachelor’s degree in health care administration from Ottawa University and graduated from the Pittston Hospital School of Nursing and the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital School of Anesthesia. She is a team on-site reviewer for the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs.
Susan Elczyna, Ph.D., was named faculty specialist in nursing. A Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist, she has worked as clinical director of The University of Scranton’s Nurse Anesthesia program since 2009. She received master’s and bachelor’s degrees in nursing from Wilkes University and a doctorate in human development from Marywood University. She has worked as a nurse anesthetist, nurse manager and staff nurse at hospitals in Northeastern Pennsylvania for more than 30 years.
Bernard J. Gilligan III, D.N.P., was named faculty specialist in nursing. He received a doctorate in nursing practice from Chatham University, a master’s in nurse anesthesiology from St. Joseph’s University, and a bachelor’s in nursing from Immaculata University. He is employed as a nurse anesthetist with Geisinger Health System and was previously an assistant program director for the Nazareth Hospital School of Nurse Anesthesiology and a flight nurse and critical care nurse for the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.
Daphne K. Golden, D.P.T., was named assistant professor of physical therapy. She has worked as a physical therapist for more than 20 years. She received a bachelor’s degree in biology from Albright College and a master’s in physical therapy from Rutgers University. She earned a doctorate in physical therapy from Temple University and is working on a second doctorate in biomechanics and movement science at the University of Delaware. Her work has been published in several scholarly journals and has taught at the University of Delaware.
Julia M. Guzman, O.T.D., was named faculty specialist in occupational therapy. She was previously employed as an assistant professor at Rutgers University, where she also supervised the occupational therapy clinic faculty of Newark Therapy Services. She received a bachelor’s degree from Kean University of New Jersey and a master’s from Dominican College of Blauvelt. She received a clinical doctorate in occupational therapy from Misericordia University and is a registered occupational therapist. She currently serves on the National Roster of Accreditation Evaluators of the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education.
Michael B. Hundley, Ph.D., was named visiting assistant professor of theology and religious studies. He received a bachelor’s degree in economics from Amherst College, a master of divinity from Trinity International University, a master of theology degree from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary and a doctorate from the University of Cambridge. Michael also spent two years as a graduate student at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.He has published two books as well as numerous articles for academic journals. He was previously an adjunct professor at Georgetown University and St. Joseph’s University, a Humboldt research fellow at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universitat of Munich, and an academic supervisor at the University of Cambridge.
Ozgur Isil, Ph.D. cand., was named assistant professor of operations and information management. He earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Texas at Austin and an MBA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he is also completing a doctorate in operations management. His research interests include green supply chain management and competitive sustainable business strategy. He previously worked as an engineer for Bemis Company in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, and for Schlumberger Ltd. in Stavanger, Norway.
Kristen M. Katchur was named faculty specialist in chemistry. She received a bachelor’s degree in biotechnology and a minor in chemistry from Marywood University, and a master’s in biochemistry from The University of Scranton. She was previously a graduate teaching assistant at The University of Scranton and a student research assistant at The Commonwealth Medical College.
Maggie R. Koehler was named faculty specialist in health administration and human resources. She previously was employed with the Wyoming Valley Health Care System, where she served as administrative director and later vice president of planning and development; senior vice president of finance; chief financial officer and assistant chief executive officer. She received a bachelor’s degree in finance and economics and an MBA from The University of Scranton and was a Fulbright Scholar to New Zealand. Most recently, she has been a self-employed business consultant and an adjunct instructor at The University of Scranton.
Mary M. Kovaleski was named faculty specialist in nursing. She received a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Wilkes University and a master’s in nursing from The University of Scranton. She has worked in nursing for nearly 30 years, as a staff nurse, intensive care unit nurse and nurse educator in local hospitals and as a clinical instructor for the nursing departments at The University of Scranton and Pennsylvania State University.
Dana R. Maida, D.P.T., was named faculty specialist in physical therapy. For the past ten years, she worked for Regional Hospital of Scranton. She received a bachelor’s degree as well as a master’s and doctorate in physical therapy from The University of Scranton and has been an adjunct faculty member at the University since 2008. She is an American Physical Therapy Association Credentialed Clinical Instructor and a member of Alpha Sigma Nu Jesuit Honor Society.
Vincent T. Marshall, Ph.D., was named faculty specialist in biology. He received a bachelor’s degree in biology from Cornell University and a doctorate in biology from University of Missouri - Columbia. He has taught at the University of Missouri - Columbia and The University of Scranton and was a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Illinois. His research has been published in several scientific journals and he has given presentations at conferences throughout the United States.
Katherine E. Purswell, Ph.D., was named faculty specialist in counseling and human services. She received a bachelor’s degree in family and consumer sciences from Texas State University – San Marcos, a master’s degree in community mental health counseling and a doctorate in counseling from University of North Texas. She has been published in numerous academic journals and has worked as a counselor at university-based clinics and a school district.
Brandice Ricciardi was named faculty specialist in counseling and human services. She was previously an adjunct instructor at The University of Scranton and a school-based behavioral health services masters health professional. She received a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Fordham University and a master’s in community counseling from The University of Scranton. Her expertise is in community counseling and wellness, behavioral health rehabilitative counseling, school-based behavioral health and marital and family therapy.
Catherine Richmond-Cullen, Ed.D., was named faculty specialist in education. She has worked as a curriculum specialist for the Northeastern Educational Intermediate Unit, an elementary and middle school teacher, and a consultant to the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts for which she managed the regional arts education partnership for 20 years. She received a bachelor’s degree in elementary urban education from Boston College, a master’s in counseling from Marywood University, elementary, middle and secondary principal certificates from The University of Scranton, and a letter of eligibility for superintendent and a doctorate in educational administration from Temple University.
Bianca M. Sabia was named faculty specialist in English and theatre. She received a bachelor’s degree in English from Wilkes University and a master’s in English from Arcadia University. She previously worked as a writing and English instructor and tutor at Wilkes University, Pennsylvania State University, Arcadia University and The University of Scranton.
John J. Sailors, Ph.D., was named visiting assistant professor of marketing, management and entrepreneurship. He is on leave as a tenured associate professor from the University of St. Thomas and an assistant professor at the University of Michigan. He received a bachelor’s degree in marketing from the University of Michigan and doctorate in marketing from Northwestern University. He has published numerous peer-reviewed papers and has also worked in the corporate sector.
Susan Scanland was named faculty specialist in nursing. She received a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Wilkes University and a master’s in nursing from the University of Pittsburgh. Susan holds national certification as a gerontological nurse practitioner. She is the founder and chief executive officer of Dementia Connection LLC, a national dementia education and consultation firm. Susan has offered presentations at nursing conferences throughout the nation and previously taught geriatrics at Binghamton University, the Wyoming Valley Family Practice Residency program in Kingston and The University of Scranton.
Jennifer Schwartz, D.P.T., was named faculty specialist in physical therapy. She previously worked as a physical therapist for patients with stroke and traumatic brain injuries as well as orthopedic and other neurological impairments. She received bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees in physical therapy from The University of Scranton and has also been a clinical instructor for physical therapy students.
Paul S. Sung, PhD, DHSc., was named associate professor of physical therapy. He received a bachelor’s degree in rehabilitation science and a master’s in health science from Yonsei University in the Republic of Korea. He received a doctorate in health science from University of St. Augustine and a doctorate in physical therapy from Nova Southeastern University. He has taught at several universities, including the Cleveland State University, Des Moines University-Osteopathic Medical Center and Clarke University. His research interests include the mechanisms of chronic low back pain, and non-operative spine care and its clinical application to neuromuscular control. His work has been published in numerous scholarly journals.
Cristen M. Walker was named faculty specialist in nursing. She previously was a clinical instructor for the Wilkes-Barre Area Career and Technical Center’s School of Practical Nursing, a family nurse practitioner for two medical practices, a staff nurse at several hospitals, and a clinical instructor at The University of Scranton. She received a bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of Pittsburgh and a master’s in nursing from the State University of New York, Binghamton. Walker also volunteers as a nurse practitioner at the Care and Concern Free Health Clinic in Pittston.
Qian Wang, Ph.D., was named assistant professor of exercise science and sport. She received a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology and human sciences from Beijing Sport University and a master’s in kinesiology and doctorate in community health from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She has taught at the University of Illinois and has been published in scholarly journals.
