Fourteen faculty members at The University of Scranton received faculty development intersession grants for 2026.

Joe Brague, Ph.D., assistant professor of biology, received a grant to research “From Bench to Manuscript: Critical Period Loss of Gonadal Hormones Differentially Regulates Dopamine-1 and Dopamine-2 Spiny Projections neuron Dendritic Spine Morphology and Motor Behavior Via Regulation of neurotrophic Mechanisms.” Dr. Brague received a bachelor’s degree from The University of Scranton and a doctoral degree from Lehigh University. He joined the Scranton faculty in 2022.

Michael Catalano, Ph.D., assistant professor of political science, received a grant to research “Court Curbing and Judicial Review: State Supreme Courts with Mandatory Jurisdiction.” Dr. Catalano received a bachelor’s degree from Gettysburg College and both a master’s and doctoral degree from Binghamton University. Catalano joined the Scranton faculty in 2024.

Vincent Farallo, Ph.D., assistant professor of biology, received a grant to research “Physiological Costs of Poison Sequestration by Dendrobatid Frogs.” Dr. Farallo received a bachelor’s degree from John Carroll University, a master’s degree from Texas State University-San Marco and a doctoral degree from Ohio University. He joined the Scranton faculty in 2020.

Beatriz Fontoura, Ph.D., assistant professor of chemistry, received a grant to research “Beyond Earth’s soil: assessing crip nutrients and toxic metals in off-world agriculture.” Dr. Fontoura received both bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Federal University of Viçosa and a doctoral degree from Federal University of São Carlos. She joined the Scranton faculty in 2025.

Christopher Hauser, Ph.D., assistant professor of philosophy, received a grant to research “Is Significant Free Will Compatible with Moral Perfection?” Dr. Hauser received a bachelor’s degree from Dartmouth College and a doctoral degree from Rutgers University. He joined the Scranton faculty in 2020.

Christopher Haw, Ph.D., associate professor of theology and religious studies, received a grant to research “Curricular Improvements in Orientation Sessions for Newly Matriculated Incarcerated Students at SCI Dallas.” Dr. Haw received a bachelor’s degree from Eastern University, a master’s degree from Villanova University and a doctoral degree from the University of Notre Dame. Haw joined the Scranton faculty in 2018.

Megan Heeder, Ph.D., assistant professor of theology and religious studies, received a grant to research “Initiating Communities of Generosity: A Christian response to Food and Social Inequality” for submission to Villanova’s Journal of Catholic Social Thought. Dr. Heeder received both a bachelor’s and master’s degree from University of Notre Dame and a doctoral degree from Marquette University. Heeder joined the Scranton faculty in 2024.

Michael Jenkins, Ph.D., professor and chair of criminal justice, cybersecurity and sociology, received a grant to research “Police and Society: An Applied and Evidence-Based Approach.” Dr. Jenkins received a bachelor’s degree from The University of Scranton and both a master’s and doctoral degree from Rutgers University. Jenkins joined the Scranton faculty in 2013.

Vanessa Jensen, Ed.D., associate professor of counseling and human services, received a grant to research “Development of Research Environments in the Applied Behavior Analysis Curriculum to Meet Accreditation Standards.” Dr. Jensen received both a bachelor’s and master’s degree from The University of Scranton and a doctoral degree from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. She joined the Scranton faculty in 2005.

Bibi Rafeiza Khan, Ph.D., assistant professor of biology, received a grant to research “Cytoskeletal Mutations and Plant Stress Resilience: A Follow-up to Recent Discoveries in Arabidopsis thaliana.” Dr. Khan received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Guyana, a master’s degree from the University of Arkansas and a doctoral degree from the University of Missouri-St. Louis. She joined the Scranton faculty in 2021.

Yibai Li, Ph.D., associate professor of operations and analytics, received a grant to research “Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) with Large Language Models for Mining Large-Scale Blockchain Literature.” Dr. Li received a bachelor’s degree from Jilin University, a master’s degree from Oklahoma State University and a doctoral degree from Washington State University. Li joined the Scranton faculty in 2013.

Rose Sebastianelli, Ph.D., professor of operations and analytics, received a grant to research “The Role of Corporate Governance in Value Chain Carbon Management.” Dr. Sebastianelli received a bachelor’s degree from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and a doctoral degree from Pennsylvania State University. She joined the Scranton faculty in 2003.

Mehmet Yetim, Ph.D., assistant professor of management and marketing, received a grant to research “The Simulated C-Suite: Methodological And Ethical Implications Of Using Artificial Intelligence To Impersonate Top Managers In Qualitative Studies.” Dr. Yetim received a bachelor’s degree from Celal Bayar University, a master’s degree from New York University and a doctoral degree from Louisiana State University. He joined the Scranton faculty in 2024.

Xinyu Zhou, Ph.D., assistant professor of management and marketing, received a grant to research “Balancing Empathy and Exploitation: The role of FLE Effort Narratives in Shaping Consumer Judgements.” Dr. Zhou received a bachelor’s degree from China University of Geosciences, a master’s degree from Zhongnan University of Economics and Law and a doctoral degree from New Mexico State University. Zhou joined the Scranton faculty in 2024.

Scranton Accounting Ph.D. Program Earns No. 1 Worldwide Research Ranking image

The University of Scranton’s Ph.D. in Accounting program is ranked No. 1 for research in accounting education, according to Brigham Young University’s Accounting Research Rankings, an internationally recognized benchmark for accounting research productivity.

The ranking measures research productivity across top accounting journals and reflects the exceptional work Scranton’s Ph.D. graduates and faculty have done in publishing influential research that helps improve accounting education. BYU’s data is categorized by topic, method and post-graduate window.

Scranton ranks No. 1 in the Main Ph.D. Program Rankings for All Education Publications 2024 in the 3-Year Recent and 6-Year Recent categories. It is fourth in the 3-Year All and 16th in the 6-Year All categories. Methodology could be found on the BYU Accounting website.

“This distinguished ranking recognizes the talent and dedication of our Ph.D. graduates, as well as the rigorous and supportive environment they experienced throughout their Ph.D. studies at The University of Scranton,” said Douglas M. Boyle, DBA’88, professor and chair of Scranton’s Accounting Department and director of the Ph.D. program. “Our Ph.D. students, graduates and faculty closely collaborate to advance educational research that upholds our Jesuit tradition, contributes to the accounting literature and benefits accounting faculty and students worldwide.”

BYU’s database lists ten Scranton Ph.D. graduates as authors — Drs. Samantha Falgout, Anthony Fulmore, Lisa S. Haylon, Heather Holcomb, Elena V. Isaacson, Gregory Kogan, Amanda S. Marcy, Thomas Kevin Parker, Linette A. Rayeski and Ashley Stampone — who collectively published 11 articles. Dr. Douglas M. Boyle was a co-author on seven of the 11 articles and Ph.D. faculty member Dr. James Boyle was a co-author on one.

Peer institutions ranked highly include Robert Gordon University in Scotland and the University of Western Australia, as well as American schools like Bentley University, Virginia Tech and the University of Alabama.

Additionally, the University’s Accounting Department is tied for second in Main University Rankings for Education Research and fourth in Main University Rankings for All Education Publications for the past six years worldwide. The 2024 report also ranked Dr. Douglas M. Boyle No. 2 in the world for accounting education publication volume in the past six years and No. 91 (tied) for Accounting Information System Research. Accounting faculty member Dr. James F. Boyle was ranked No. 10 (tied); and fellow faculty members Dr. Amanda Marcy and Dr. Ashley Stampone were ranked No. 79 (tied) worldwide. Dr. Stampone was also ranked No. 91 (tied) for Accounting Information System Research.

The University of Scranton’s accounting program is in the Kania School of Management, which was selected by the Princeton Review as one of the nation’s Best Business Schools. U.S. News and World Report recently ranked Scranton’s accounting program as one of the top 40 nationally.

The University of Scranton takes pride in its students’ academic excellence, which is made possible in large part by dedicated high school teachers. Three such educators were honored last month for contributing to Scranton students’ academic success.

Selected students and teachers were presented on Dec. 3 with Rose Kelly Awards in a special ceremony at the Weinberg Memorial Library.

The Rose Kelly Award was established by University of Scranton alumnus Joseph Wineburgh, Ph.D., to link the efforts of educators to the achievements of college students. The award is presented jointly to a student in each of the University’s colleges who has completed two years at Scranton and to the teacher he or she recognizes as having a great impact in his or her life. Students are selected based on exemplary achievement in both academics and general campus involvement.

College of Arts and Sciences

Katie Carrea, of Glenn Mills, received the Rose Kelly Award for the College of Arts and Sciences. She honored William Wells, her emergency medical technician (EMT) teacher at Bayard Rustin Technical College High School, who taught her what it meant to work in the healthcare field. A dean’s list student, Carrea is a junior mathematical sciences major on a pre-medical track. On campus, she is a math tutor, member of the women’s crew team and attends CrossFit. She also volunteers with Students Together Achieving Remarkable Success (S.T.A.R.S.) and works as an EMT for Pennsylvania Ambulance.

Kania School of Management

Rebecca Boyle, of Sugarloaf, received the Rose Kelly Award for the Kania School of Management. She honored Patricia Patton, her business education teacher at Marian Catholic High School, who taught her about the fundamentals of finance, marketing and investments and pushed her to reach her full potential. A dean’s list student, Boyle is a junior business administration major. She has worked as an intern for SL Green Realty Corp., the City of Scranton, the Advocacy Alliance and Mountain View Real Estate. She also founded the Lovely Lemon Digital Design and has served twice as team captain for the PwC case competition. Boyle was the chief marketing officer at Pennsylvania Free Enterprise Week and placed in the top 5% nationally in the Beta Bowl Competition. On campus, she is the marketing chair for Kania Women in Business and is a member of the entrepreneurship club, Robert L. McKeage Business Leadership Honors Program, Frank P. Corcione Business Honors Program and Omega Beta Sigma Women’s Business Honor Society.

Leahy College of Health Sciences

Sarah Lyons received the Rose Kelly Award for the Leahy College of Health Sciences. She honored Jennifer McAndrew who was her chemistry and honors chemistry teacher at Holy Cross High School. A dean’s list student, Lyons is a junior nursing major and is in the accelerated Master of Family Nursing program. She works as a per diem nurse assistant for Geisinger Community Medical Center, where she also served as an intern. She volunteers with Hospice of the Sacred Heart and at The University of Scranton’s open house. On campus, she is a spin instructor, completed a community-based learning project by leading and volunteering with the Nursing Department’s Period Poverty Project and also has previously served as a peer health educator with the Center for Health Education and Wellness.

Performance Music at The University of Scranton will continue in the holiday spirit at its 24th Annual Empty Stocking Fund Benefit Concert, this year featuring the Scranton Brass Orchestra. The concert is at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 14, in the University’s Houlihan-McLean Center (Mulberry Street and Jefferson Avenue, downtown Scranton). The event is open to the public. Attendees are asked to bring either a new unwrapped toy, a new piece of child’s clothing or a cash donation. All donated items will directly benefit children of local families in need this holiday season via the University’s Center for Service and Social Justice.

Founded by Cheryl Boga and Hal Baillie, Ph.D., and with artistic support from Mark Gould, and now in its 13th season, Scranton Brass Orchestra is a fully professional, 27-member ensemble comprised of brass and percussion players/teachers from across the region. Since its founding in June 2011, the group’s performances have been free and open to the public and have featured nationally and internationally acclaimed guests, among them some of the most acclaimed brass players of our time. Some of the goals of the group include to provide high-level large brass ensemble performance and listening opportunities, serve as an aural and visual model to aid in the tonal and technical development of student brass players and as a professional development resource for brass performers and teachers in the region, and give participating regional brass musicians and teachers opportunities to work with and observe masters of the art of brass playing.

The Empty Stocking Fund concert traces its origins back to 1999, when Boga’s friend, Alan Drake, the former chairman of the music department at Georgia’s Augusta University, told her about a benefit Christmas concert held there. She was intrigued and Drake gave his blessing for her to bring the concept back to Scranton for the following year. For the inaugural year, she and Drake waged a friendly competition to see which concert could raise the most money. Scranton won — and an annual tradition was born.

The concert’s charitable mission makes it particularly special. The University’s Performance Music family is always moved when they see the donated items out on display the night of the concert. Meanwhile, the performance itself never fails to produce an abundance of yuletide cheer.

For those who are unable to attend the concert but would still like to drop off a toy or other donation, they will be accepted at the Houlihan-McLean Center this week (Monday, Dec. 8 through Thursday, Dec. 11) from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. (Before the day of the concert, please use the Jefferson Avenue entrance.)

After receiving an undergraduate degree in his native country of India, Mohan Reddy Palle arrived at The University of Scranton — sight unseen — with big dreams.

Palle first stepped on campus one week before classes started in the fall of 2024. Before setting foot in the classroom to pursue a master’s degree in accounting analytics, however, he needed to learn a few things: everything from guidance on documentation to tips about American culture and advice on winter clothing.

“We didn’t see snow back in India,” Palle said on a particularly freezing afternoon, reaching into his pocket for one of the most practical items he uses in Scranton. “Here’s my ChapStick.”

Palle is one of a handful of international students who will graduate this month, capping a journey of discovery and adaptation largely aided by the University’s Office of Global Education.

“A lot of times, they’re arriving the week before classes begin and trying to settle into their apartment, getting everything they need for their apartment, everything they need for their classes and they need to be able to start classes right away,” said Crystal Cool, manager of international student and scholar services. “It’s a lot. They’re hitting the ground running in a completely different culture and climate.”

The Office of Global Education held a farewell gathering earlier this month at its offices in O’Hara Hall. Palle attended with some friends also from India. The University serves 200-plus international students from about 20 countries.

In addition to helping international students settle into their new surroundings, the Office of Global Education organizes trips throughout the academic year and keeps in contact with students through the summer months to ensure they’re on track for a successful transition.

“We’ve gotten to see a lot of cultures, a lot of people, met a lot of friends from other countries,” said Pardhu Meka, a business analytics graduate student. “Meeting all the people and learning about their interests and cultures — it’s given me more knowledge to understand people, how they think, their vision. I got the best chance here to explore the U.S, the people and their cultures.”

The cultural exchange Meka and his classmates experienced goes beyond campus.

Sai Prabhu Siddabathini, a health administration graduate student, pointed out that he’s traveled to New York City, Philadelphia and Atlantic City and will travel this month to Miami.

For all the fun he’s had off campus, though, Siddabathini, who previously held a government job in India, said the highlight of his time in Scranton has been working in a pharmacy residency program at the University’s Edward R. Leahy Jr. Clinic for the Uninsured.

“I feel proud about that because we are serving those who are really in need and they’re getting the perfect care in the pharmacy center,” Siddabathini said.

Palle, Meka, Siddabathini and their classmates interviewed all hope to take advantage of Post - Completion Optional Practical Training (OPT), a temporary employment authorization allowing students on an F-1 student visa to gain real-world work experience related to their field of study, with Scranton serving as a stepping stone to their budding careers.

The 35th Annual Evening for Northeast Pennsylvania’s Environmental Partnership dinner once again emphasized partnership, environmental stewardship and community collaboration. It was a night filled with inspiration and celebration, recognizing the individuals and organizations making a meaningful impact across the region. The event honored a variety of groups dedicated to conservation, education and sustainability, all demonstrating that anyone can contribute to protecting our natural world.

Students, professionals, and environmental advocates from across the region gathered to share ideas and celebrate achievements. Many attendees from local universities found the event particularly motivating, as it showcased the collective power of community-driven environmental action. Carolyn McNamara Barry, Ph.D., Daniel Marenda, Dr. Terrance Sweeney, Dr. Christopher Howey and Mr. Mark Murphy represented the University of Scranton, engaging with award recipients and emphasizing the importance of integrating education and sustainability in the region’s future.

University of Scranton student Jordon Wagner received this year’s Emerging Environmental Leader Award, recognizing his exceptional commitment to sustainability and campus engagement. Reflecting on the honor, Wagner shared:

“I take great pride in being an environmental steward for our university and regional community, and I felt truly honored to be recognized as this year's Emerging Leader. My experience at the Pennsylvania Environmental Council dinner was incredibly positive, as it offered meaningful conversations, valuable networking opportunities, and a shared appreciation for environmental values.”

Throughout the evening, a strong focus on partnership underscored the importance of collaboration between local organizations, government agencies, and community members. Informational tables and displays allowed guests to learn about local environmental projects, conservation initiatives, and potential internship opportunities. These interactive exhibits encouraged students to connect with professionals and explore future pathways in sustainability.

Attendees left with a powerful message: meaningful environmental progress is achieved through shared effort, education, and long-term commitment. Students and faculty from The University of Scranton expressed pride in joining regional leaders and organizations dedicated to advancing environmental excellence and stewardship.

Rev. Joseph M. McShane, S.J., H'04, Receives Regis 2025 Deo et Patriae Award image

One person's dedication can have a profound positive impact on the lives of many.

On Nov. 5 in Manhattan, Regis High School recognized Rev. Joseph M. McShane, S.J., H'04, as an individual of that caliber.

Fr. McShane, the Superior of the Scranton Jesuit Community, received the Regis 2025 Deo et Patriae Award at a reception held on Nov. 5 at the tuition-free and merit-based Jesuit High School in New York. Fr. McShane led The University of Scranton as president from 1998 to 2003.

The award is given annually by Regis, to "a person who has served Regis and the community in a distinguished capacity during the course of his or her life," as described in an article on the school's website.

Fr. McShane, a member of the Regis Class of 1967 and the former President of Fordham University, is quoted in that same article:

"My debt to Regis is enormous," said Fr. McShane. "In fact, it is not wide of the mark to say that after my parents, Regis was the most formative influence in my life. And so the truth of the matter is I owe just about everything — everything I have and everything I have become — to Regis. Everything."

Exhibit Opened, Award Dedicated in Honor of David J. Wenzel ’69, G’74 image

The University of Scranton mourns the loss of a distinguished alumnus and civic leader whose death happened the very same night he was honored by his alma mater.

David J. Wenzel ’69, G’74, a decorated military veteran and public servant, died the evening of Wednesday, Nov. 5, at the Gino J. Merli Veterans Center. He was 80.

A Scranton native who lost both legs and an arm while serving with the U.S. Army in Vietnam, Wenzel returned home and earned a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree from Scranton. He then dedicated his life to public service, most notably from 1986-90 as the 27th Mayor of Scranton. After leaving office, Wenzel continued working as a pioneering disability rights advocate.

The University’s Center for Ethics and Excellence in Public Service (CEEPS) had long planned to showcase memorabilia from Wenzel’s remarkable career at an exhibit at the Weinberg Memorial Library. “A Life of Service: Celebrating David J. Wenzel,” which opened earlier in the evening of Nov. 5. It was attended by numerous local and University officials, as well as Wenzel’s friends and family, including his wife, Janet, who accepted the inaugural CEEPS Public Service Award on his behalf. Going forward, the award will be renamed in Wenzel’s honor.

“David was a happy warrior,” said Wenzel’s friend, Joe Riccardo. “He kept that wonderful smile and twinkle in his eye, but he fought. He fought for his country in Vietnam. He fought for our community, both as Mayor and as an active citizen. Boy, he fought all his life to maintain his dignity; it wasn’t always easy as a triple amputee, but David was not going to allow any disability to get in his way to prevent him from achieving his goals.”

Prior to serving as mayor, Wenzel was Scranton’s tax collector. After leaving office, he served on the executive committee of the National Council on Disability. Later, he authored a book, “Scranton’s Mayors,” and received the honor of having his name attached to the beautiful David Wenzel Treehouse at Nay Aug Park.

Fellow Vietnam veteran and former President Judge of Lackawanna County, Tom Munley, spoke at the event and called Wenzel “my hero.” Former U.S. Sen. and Leahy Distinguished Fellow in Public Service Bob Casey called him “an inspiration.” Former Scranton Mayor Christopher Doherty also spoke of Wenzel as a “great man.”

“Think of the impact he had on young men and women who asked the question: ‘Who’s this man? And he was the Mayor? What happened to him and what has he done?’” Doherty said. “When they get the answers, they realize here’s someone you should follow and model. Here’s someone who is a true leader of our city and a fine example of what our city produces: men of dignity, honor and honesty.”

The exhibit is open and will remain on display during regular library hours at the fifth-floor Heritage Room through Sunday, Dec. 14.

Vice President for Mission and Ministry Daniel Cosacchi, Ph.D., announces four upcoming campus traditions to celebrate Advent, which began Sunday, Dec. 2.

First, Campus Ministry invites the University community to attend one of Scranton's most cherished traditions: the Advent Mass, which will take place on Sunday, Dec. 7, at 5 p.m. in the Byron Center. Afterward, attendees will process with candles to the Dionne Green to bless and light the University's Christmas Tree. All are welcome at the event. Please feel free to bring family members such as parents, siblings, children, friends.

The Center for Service and Social Justice (CSSJ) invites all to take an ornament from the Mission and Ministry Christmas Giving Tree located on the second floor of the DeNaples Center in order to purchase a gift for a child in need in the area. Unwrapped gifts are due to the CSSJ office, DeNaples Center, room 205 B, by Dec. 12. All donated gifts will support the Gifts for Kids program. The Friends of the Poor and Catherine McAuley Center (FOTP/CMC), in partnership with Catholic Social Services, are once again coordinating this community gift-giving event, hosted at The University of Scranton’s Byron Center. This program serves families living at or below the federal poverty guidelines who have not enrolled in other holiday assistance programs. Families can walk through and select gifts for the children in their household.
The Gifts for Kids event will take place on Tuesday, Dec. 16 and Wednesday, Dec. 17. Families are preregistered.

Also, CSSJ is partnering with Performance Music for the annual Empty Stocking Fund Benefit Concert at 7:30 p.m, on Dec. 14 in Houlihan-Mclean Center. The admission charge is one new, unwrapped toy, a new toiletry item, or a cash donation. All proceeds will directly benefit local families in need.

Finally, continuing with a longstanding tradition, The Jesuit Center continues offering the daily Advent Devotional, which provides fruitful reflections on the scripture readings and feasts of the day. Sign up for these reflections.

John Lyons ’64 and Connie Ruscik Lyons, Marywood ’62, recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with a party at their home in Jenkintown. The couple was married on October 16,1965, at Sacred Heart Church, Scranton, by Rev. John Albosta. They have two children: John Scott, retired from the FDNY, and Kimberly Ann, of Boise, Idaho, as well as one granddaughter, Kaia, of New York City.

A group of Scranton alumni continued their annual tradition of gathering for a mini reunion in Cape May, New Jersey, enjoying several days of dinner, drinks and music. The special friends who reunited in October 2025 were Gary Beilman ’76, Andrea (Rygiel) Beilman ’76, Roe (Bunting) Murphy ’76, Jim Helhowski ’76, Rose (Lally) Doyle ’76, Donna (Lange) Helhowski ’76, John O’Boyle ’74, Lucy (Burke) O’Boyle ’76 and Wayne Wilhelm ’76.

Ed Burnetta, M.D. '84, Villanova, is delighted that his son, Chris Burnetta, has committed to the admissions process at Harvard as a member of the 2027 Men's Lacrosse recruit group. He will graduate from Haverford School in 2027. Chris will be joining his three older sisters as an Ivy attendee. His oldest sister Isabelle graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 2013, Kristin graduated from Harvard in 2020, and the youngest sister Sabrina is a junior at Cornell.

Christopher J. Kane '86, Jupiter, Florida, startup co-founder of 3PL-RX, announced a merger with the American Chain of Warehouses, a nonprofit organization founded in 1911. American Chain provides sales and marketing strategies and services for Warehouse Logistics members across the U.S. and Canada. Christopher J. Kane will become president; his son, Zach Kane, will be vice president of Administration and Technology. American Chain is one of the oldest Warehouse organizations whose members are long-established family businesses.

Richard W. Peuser '86, G'87, Brookfield, Maryland, retired on October 31, 2025, from the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) after 37.5 years in public service. His final position was director of the Processing and Release Division, National Declassification Center. As branch chief of the Textual Reference Unit, he assisted thousands of researchers, both at the Washington, D.C., building and at the College Park, Maryland, facility. One of the highlights of his career was assisting the late David McCullough on his book, "1776." “It was truly an honor and privilege working at this incredible institution,” he said.

Margot Royer-Johnson ’95, East Providence, Rhode Island, celebrated her 25th year as head coach of the NCAA Division I Providence College volleyball program in August.

Christine Royce, Ed.D. G’95, Newburg, is the recipient of a Fulbright Scholarship to teach and study in Cairo, Egypt, for the spring 2026 semester while on sabbatical from Shippensburg University. As part of this Fulbright, Royce will be teaching at Ain Shams University in Cairo, where her focus will be on the preparation of teachers, specifically in the STEM areas.

Joseph D. Ward '95, Coral Gables, Florida, has been named president and chief operating officer at Quirch Foods.

Nicole E. Negowetti ’02, Melrose, Massachusetts, published a new book, "Feeding the Future," which offers a radical reframing of the global food system to address injustices and existential threats.

Mertz recently presented nationally at the International Magnet and Magnet Pathway Conference in October 2025 and will present at the Association of Operating Room Nurses (AORN) Global Surgical Conference and Expo in April 2026 on her work “Safety Coach Simulation Training: Empowering Nurses to Speak Up in the Operating Room.” Mertz has been the manager of Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center’s 39 Level 1 operating rooms since 2022.

Will Craven '19, Scranton, has joined Moses Taylor Foundation, a private foundation with a mission to improve the health of people in Northeastern Pennsylvania, as its operations and grants officer. University Presidents, City Mayors Mark ‘Murgas Day’ (Photos) image

The University of Scranton and King’s College, along with the cities of Scranton and Wilkes-Barre, recently partnered on a civic celebration and demonstration to honor one of the region’s most notable inventors of the 20th century.

One-hundred-twenty years ago in 1905, Rev. Joseph Murgas publicly unveiled the “Tone Method,” a wireless communication system capable of transmitting messages reliably over long distances. Father Murgas, who was born in Slovakia but lived, died and is buried in Northeastern Pennsylvania, successfully tested the technology with a series of messages relayed between local stakeholders in Scranton and Wilkes-Barre.

On Saturday, Nov. 15, University of Scranton president Rev. Joseph G. Marina, S.J., Ph.D., King’s College president Rev. Thomas P. Looney, C.S.C., Ph.D., Scranton Mayor Paige Cognetti and Wilkes-Barre Mayor George C. Brown recreated the historic transmission from the University’s W3USR amateur radio station in the Loyola Science Center and the Richard Abbas Alley Center for Health Sciences at King’s. In addition to the message relay, guests were treated to refreshments while visiting exhibits on display at both campuses, showcasing Father Murgas’ vast accomplishments, breakthroughs and artworks.

“This event truly was a special occasion,” said Nathaniel Frissell, Ph.D., W2NAF, associate professor of physics and engineering at The University of Scranton and member of the Murgas Amateur Radio Club. “We were able to bring together two wonderful cities and universities in a very unique way, all while celebrating the legacy of Father Murgas.

“He truly was a man who cared for his people while also advancing human knowledge. I am grateful to not only have been part of this celebration, but also to be a member of the Murgas Amateur Radio club that was established in his honor.”

The day also marked the 50-year anniversary of the Murgas Amateur Radio Club, which serves local radio operators and regularly participates in events and provides communications support for multiple local nonprofit organizations.

High School Students Attend 5th Annual Business Conference

A new Ethical Encounters program connects themes in the University’s annual Royal Read with an interactive local experience for first-year students as part of the First-Year Seminar program. This year, students read the book "Cherished Belonging," by Rev. Greg Boyle, S.J., founder of Homeboy Industries, the largest gang rehabilitation and reentry program in the world. The Ethical Encounters events brought together students and faculty in first-year seminar courses with Cypress House at St. Luke’s, a bakery job reentry program modeled after Homeboy Industries. The students had heard Fr. Boyle and two of his colleagues, Junior and George, speak on campus in September.

At two events held in October and November, students visited St. Luke’s Church in downtown Scranton and had the opportunity to hear from local individuals who had been formerly incarcerated, sharing their stories of reentry in the Scranton area. They also learned about the Cypress House program from St. Luke’s Church pastor, Rev.Tyler Parry.

The panel was followed by a Q&A and small-group-facilitated table discussions with students making connections between the book’s themes and the panel stories. They discussed what it means to dismantle barriers of exclusion, including such issues as securing a job post-prison, experiencing stigma and other biases toward those who have been incarcerated. They also reflected on what it means to accompany and learn from those marginalized in our society, and ways we can all contribute to fostering greater belonging on our campus, community and beyond.

This year’s Ethical Encounters is a collaboration between the University’s First Year Seminar program and Office of Community Relations together with community partner Cypress House at St. Luke’s Church.

The public can learn more about Cypress House, a member of the Global Homeboy Network, at their upcoming Open House on Friday, Dec. 5. Visitors will have the opportunity to tour their newly renovated kitchen, meet local residents who have experienced incarceration, enjoy artwork and poetry created by these individuals, participate in basket raffles, and savor refreshments. Two University of Scranton faculty members, Dr. Michael Jenkins and Dr. Ashley Stampone, serve on their Board of Directors.

This year’s Ethical Encounters is a collaboration between the University’s First Year Seminar program and the Office of Community Relations, together with community partner Cypress House at St. Luke’s Church. The program is funded by the Ethics Across the Curriculum initiative.
